HoyoPlay Launcher (1.5.2) won't launch after trying to update
I tried to update the launcher to 1.5.2 using the launcher. But it crashed automatically and cannot be launched afterwards.
Click to run the launcher -> launcher seems to launch for a sec with its icon being in the taskbar/notification bar -> crashes and it's gone.

But I have no idea how to make Heroic run the latest Wine, if I were to check the version in WINECFG of Heroic client, it will still show that I'm running Wine 8.0 instead of 10.5. Terminal does show that I'm running 10.5.

Steps taken thus far: Reinstalling launcher to older version (the 1.4.5 version is seemingly the current default version if you were to download the .exe straight off from their website), set a separate branch with default Wine prefix to test 1.5.2

Tested ZZZ and Genshin, you cannot launch Genshin despite using the older launcher version. Any attempts for me to use the newer launcher has failed. Genshin will launch if you follow the steps as stated her, to disconnect the internet while launching the game.

The disconnect from Internet thing seems to be a step to bypass the built in Anti-Cheat check. According to the reddit post, this AC checks for Steam Deck hardware now, so it's probably going to whitelist only Steam OS/Steam Deck

For ZZZ removing the prefix runs the game once but it still crashes on subsequent launches.
Using wine-staging-10.4 I was able to start the game before it crashed my entire game. I'm running from EGS for reference the game was running fine yesterday. This is also the case for the steam deck.

I got both ZZZ and Genshin to run by selecting their direct exe file as the alternative exe to run in advanced settings, without going through their launchers. But then I uninstalled genshin to try a clean install before finding this thread and now I can't install it again. :thonk:

I found a Solution.
I uninstalled all the games (ZZZ and GI for me)
Went into Epic Games store
Added the two games with “install”
Went into settings
Selected “Wine GE latest” as the wine version
Downloaded the hoyoplay.exe from the official website
Clicked on run exe on prefix in settings and ran the exe
Went through quick install to install the games
And then you can select the game .exe to launch directly with latest ge proton

Same issue here, was able to run the launcher once a few minutes ago but it had seemingly forgotten the game was even installed (“Install Game” prompt as opposed to “Launch Game”) No luck so far since that fluke, both with GI and ZZZ (EGS sideload as i run on deck)
Might just wait for hoyo to throw us a fix (hopefully lol) if the high CPU bug is a thing now

i have problems too, the cpu bug i have only on my laptop, i start the launcher, cut my internet, start the game to the login wait for error, internet on and i can play without 100% CPU usage, but that was before yesterday. on my main rig it works only one time if i change the proton version and delete the cache before, on the laptop it works one time with the wine staging 10.4 which i installed via proton plus only for heroic games launcher.
Is the problem wiht cheaters so big? how can someone cheat the game? and what is ZZZ which i read in other posts?
I disabled UMU but this works only for one start

I have the same Issue with Gensin and ZZZ on Steam Deck, and what is funny on Steam Deck only. My Mint setup runs fine (ZZZ only, can't check Genshin as it's not installed), but deck using the same settings and no matter the proton chosen just crashes launcher after less than a second.
Running via latest wine-ge is lottery. One time it runs, others it shows critical error of 'HYP.exe'
It's sad that you ask them to make HSR Linux playable, and instead they decide to make other games less linux playable (good that they don't locked them at all... at least yet).

I just went through this whole thread to fix this issue for myself and I wanted to summarize how to get Genshin Impact running right now. This might apply to other Hoyo games.
1. Install GE-Proton-latest from the Wine Manager menu inside Heroic Launcher, if you don't have it already.
2. In the settings for Genshin inside Heroic launcher, choose GE-Proton-latest as the Wine version under the Wine tab.
3. This might be optional, but based on what I was reading you can uncheck everything in the Other tab. Specifically the anticheat runtimes are not needed and will likely only increase CPU usage. Of note, others have had to set the Disable umu option under the Advanced tab. This was not necessary for me.
4. Since the Hoyo launcher seems to be the problem, I've set Heroic to launch the Genshin exe directly. For me this was at
/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/Genshin Impact/pfx/drive_c/Program Files/Genshin Impact game/GenshinImpact.exe
5. Launch the game and enjoy.wise-whiteOP•6mo ago

I made ZZZ working on Deck with wine-ge-latest. Launcher crashes with 40% probability when launched, but if not – you can start the game normally.
Performance doesn't seems to be worse than with Proton GE or Proton Experimental, so it's woth to stick with the solution until the launcher get fixed, or the game update drops.
Maybe you have the same situation as mine. PC with Mint works, Deck got broken – both shared similar settings (except game shortcut being passed to Steam on Deck, to run in Game Mode – howewer in desktop mode launcher also didn't wanted to run).

according to my experiments you can launch the launchers if you switch to wine staging
so basically you can open up the launcher with wine, locate the game since it doesn't remember that the game was already installed, update, close the launcher, switch back to proton and then run the game by the exe itself

Asking cause there seems to be a lot of back and forth in the thread, what exactly, if any, are the working steps at the moment?
So far I’ve added HoYoPlay as an alternative exe but it’s asking me to reinstall every time I launch it through heroic (probably cause I selected the installer rather than the installer exe given that I can’t figure out how to do it otherwise) and can get to the launcher menu now. If I install genshin now will it work as is or are there more steps I should take
Also, just to make sure, when you normally uninstall a game through heroic, it’s smart enough to uninstall both the launcher and all the game files right? It’s not creating multiple copies of my game files?

the proper steps are to basically use wine-staging or wine-ge to open up the launcher and install the games or update them
and to point the alternative EXE to the game exe that you want to play, which makes heroic start the game directly without the launcher stuff
you can use proton to open the game itself but launcher crashes when you use proton

Used these steps and got it running off the Steam launcher on my Steam Deck. Is there anyway to update the game without the need of the launcher? I've predominantly been playing on mobile before switching to Steam Deck due to issues with the mobile version, so idk how it entirely works. No viable PC atm either.

It looks like it is possible to download the update files outside the launcher, but not recommended and likely to cause issues when applying the update. And that's just for Genshin.
I would consider the instructions I have to be a very temporary kludge until someone can sort out why the launcher fails.

To avoid all of this, you can simply manually add the genshin.exe file to steam as a non steam game
after adding to steam, force proton compatability to 9.0 or highger

While yes it is not the way you should be doing it, the problem is that the proper way isn’t working right now. The EpicGames login parameter bug is still active and has been there for nearly 25 hours at this point
The reality is that, for games where you HAVE to login every day, people need an active fix for the moment and thats the best one we have for now

Oh, so you guys are also having problems when trying to launch genshin impact?
I'm using GE-Proton 27, it works SOMETIMES.
Like, it launched the first time I clicked, the download bar got to 30% or something like that and it suddenly closed/crashed.
After that I tried opening again, the "Play" button changed to "Playing(Stop)" and immediately went back to "Play".
It happened a few more times until I decided to Verify and Repair the files, then it worked again.
After sometime I clicked at a random spot in the game's window and it closed again.
It's really random and I'm being forced to restore the download everytime until it finishes

Update 18/04/25:
-I was an idiot for updating to Kubuntu 25.04, as it downgraded my WINE version to 9+. The distro upgrade is just live and available for me today.
-Apparently according to others, GE Wine is definitely still using 8+, as such I have not been running that version in all the tests
-A workaround for this would be to use Lutris to launch the launcher for updates, then use Heroic to launch your games directly. (Heroic allows the game's web browser functions etc to work)

So what I did was that I installed using a fresh installer via Heroic. (So it builds the prefixes and what not) I made sure the prefix is set to Wine-GE latest just for extra measure
Then I go onto Lutris, add the game by manually adding the launcher.exe, set it to Wine, ensure it's running at least Wine 9.0+.
Installing stuff from Lutris is just annoying, I gave up Lutris for Heroic, so I don't enjoy having to come back to Lutrist at all

If you already have the launcher installed, then go to Lutris, add the launcher manually, make sure it runs the latest Wine version (9+ and above). You'll be able to launch the launcher.
But you'll want to continue using Heroic to launch the installed games via Proton, so add the games' .exe into Heroic instead.
I think this is solved for now with the following work arounds:
For Games: Use Heroic to launch the game .exe directly, Proton works without issues
For Launcher, to manage updates and what not: Use Lutris to launch the launcher.exe. Ensure it's running Wine version 9+ in Lutris.
As such I will mark this thread as solved. Thank you everyone for helping and brainstorming the workarounds!

Okay. So you have the thing installed with Heroic at first right? (Game -> Heroic -> whatever prefixes and directory the launcher is installed in) Go to Lutris, add a game manually by linking the .exe, so you just link that .exe that's in the same directory as your launcher.
You will get to choose the runner option, make sure it's Wine. And make sure it's running at version 9.0+.

Nah you were told to use the more complicated option, ProtonPlus does make it "self evident" when you open it. You just need to click on Heroic Games Launcher and then Wine-Staging-Tkg is right there.

ON HoYoLab I've found a fix, maybe it will help.
1- Go to the installation folder, then navigate to the "Genshin Impact Game" folder, then to "GenshinImpact_Data".
The path should be something like "X:\Genshin Impact\Genshin Impact Game\GenshinImpact_Data".
2- Delete the "Plugins" folder.
3- Open the launcher, click the cogwheel on the upper right corner, go down, and then click on the "Repair" button under the Repair Game submenu.
4- Wait for the verification and re-download of the deleted assets.

Folks also mentioned that "foreign archives" triggers the error. But I have absolute no clue what could be foreign archives in Genshin folders.
They only mention
The possible foreign archives might include the .zip, .exe, .dll, .dmp extensions, and possibly others as well. So if deleting plugins does not help, maybe try to delete these executables and binaries

Wild that this is the case and it's probably a my setup only issue, but I seem to be able to load the launcher perfectly with Wine-Staging-Tkg but Genshin Impact only loads with Proton 9. It's easy enough to switch the target exe from the launcher to the game itself but in case anyone else has this problem I wanted to note it.

For Genshin, it looks like if you're using GE-Proton, the anticheat is still trying to load
016c:err:module:import_dll Library WDFLDR.SYS (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\HoYoKProtect.sys") not found
this does not occur when you use stock Proton 9 or Experimental but only if you set the Genshin exe as the alternative exe to skip the launcher. Genshin runs fine but only works with a Proton 9 version. The launcher has been verified to work with Wine 10.5. After the launcher updates the game files just change Heroic to point directly to the genshin exe and things work fine.
It isn't ideal but the launcher isn't needed all the time so changing the exe that Heroic points to is a small effort.

Alternatively you should be able to download directly from the hoyoverse website

I'm willing to try the steps and downloaded ProtonPlus and the Wine 10.5 thing, but I'm having trouble looking how to uninstall ZZZ so that I can reinstall it. I'm trying to login to Epic through Heroics and it's not letting me in. Am I missing something?

Because I can't find the game and I thought going through the steps would allow me to use the HoyoPlay launcher to find it so it can both go on to update and allow me to play.
I'm not reinstalling now. Gonna try Proton 9.0 (Beta) to launch the launcher and see if that nets me the ability to update and play.
No dice.
Maybe I'm having trouble because I recently installed Hoyoplay Launcher from the site itself.
Found a fix. Copied the exe file onto to the Desktop. I honestly don't know why I couldn't find it before when it was on the right folder. Sorry for any confusion. Gonna update and follow the rest of the steps and see if it works thereafter.

That WAS how it was working and that is the intended way for it to work; just download the game, hit run and you’re playing
An update made by hoyoverse made it so that most things other than Hoyoverse’s own HoYoPlay launcher stopped working
It “appears” to be a bug and should be resolved at some point in the future hopefully maybe
Theres honestly no guarantee cause hoyoverse technically doesn’t endorse playing on Linux but knowing them they’ll “probably” add in fixes in the future to solve the ongoing problems

my guess is that they implemented some features into the launcher that wine cannot support atm
so if anything it might be wine's fault for not being able to run those features

I will almost never blame wine for a dev updating something that breaks support, especially framing it as “wine’s fault” as you are suggesting.
Doubly so when fixes are already implemented in something bleeding edge like Wine Staging

Experimental was updated to 10 this week, so it sounds like whatever was patched to make HoyoPlay work has been incorporated. Keep an eye out for a GE release based on 10

If the game launches directly, it sounds like you set the alternative exe and didn’t remove it
As of last night, Proton 10 and Experimental worked with umu disabled. This requires Steam running in the background, and it probably doesn't work with flatpak Steam.
Given that this has some issues and overhead, keep using Wine-Staging-tkg's latest version.

I haven't tried Proton 10 yet but I did the update by running HYP.exe without Heroic launcher, using Wine, then, once the update is finished, I run the game on Heroic.

I''ve been trying to get Mihoyo games to run on my machine for some time, and i've got it pretty much nailed down to: Turn on Steam Runtime, change drive settings in winecfg to /home/user/Games instead of /
But i've noticed that whenever i try to start genshin after first install, it just crashes and doesn't even open Hoyoplay, which is weird, i just installed it yesterday and now it's not working? That's extremely weird and happened a few times, i narrowed it to just "reinstall everytime i wanna play", but that's not really sustainable, and i wanna understand wtf is going in, and why it crashes!?
Distro: Linux mint
Hardware:
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2667 0 (12) @ 3.500GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
RAM: 32GB

The issue is back, this time launcher loads, but Genshin doesn't.
Trying out few things before going into details
I realised I was using GE-Proton 10-x instead of Proton Experimental.

Hello, I'm very new to Linux gaming so I don't really understand what the good setup is.
I'm on Fedora 42 Workstation and I installed the Flatpak from the app store.
There's an issue in Hoyo's side which only launches the game if I unplug my internet after I press 'Launch' in the launcher, I got that solution from YouTube.
However, I've redone the install multiple times today because somehow, the initial install only worked if I did install + play in a row. If I fully shut down my machine or restart more than once, Heroic acts either as if I had no file at all with no prefix (while it exists in the file explorer) or in Genshin launcher, as if I didn't download the game, while it is on my main drive and takes the space it's supposed to take (90+ GB). When I browse to add it by hand, it doesn't work.
I've tried with the most recent Wine and Proton versions, is this the problem ?
What is the optimal setup to get that not only to run once, but also that I don't have to reinstall everything everytime I shut down my laptop?
Thanks for your help. It feels very frustrating because I got it to work few times but it broke everytime, meanwhile i could set the good resolution and my controller inside the game, so it's not like it isn't working at all... I did a new install everytime and erased the ones that broke because I don't have infinite space on my drive.
I'd really appreciate to get Genshin working on my laptop, the few minutes I gamed it it was very smooth

It's okay, @F4ngDragon guided me into the process, I'm new so I didn't do like you all lol ! It's fixed now
I tried to do it through the .exe of Genshin and not via Epic store, so it didn't recognise my install path well. I did it through his guidance using the Epic store and all went alright
