Let's Argue: The Devil Wears Prada - Topic of the day 4/28/25
Is it an accurate depiction of the fashion industry? Is the boyfriend the real villain? Did you not watch the movie and want to argue with someone who did? Let's hear it!

I'll have fully formed thoughts but the book has a few key differences notably the boyfriend is less of a whiny dick
the boyfriend sucks
also the cerulean speech is probably the best distillation of trends, the industry and cerulean
i wonder how much input anna had in choosing miranda
had it mentioned in an english class today and i didnt even do it
i used to work in corp retail and the designer girlies had it the worst
like i'd say bottom of the totem pole had similar duties but the way designer pods treated the most junior buyers was the most dehumanizing
one sr buyer treated their most jr buyer as a PA for sure - jr buyer managed beauty appts and personal calendar on top of relevant to corp retail work duties
What the fuck I watched this movie this weekend
I think if anything it's just a fairly accurate representation of a relationship where one of the people is career minded and the other is not
I found the ending to not be satisfactory
Right after it ended I said to my gf "wow it's a good thing neither of us cares about our jobs"
See im not career driven but if my baddie partner got a 90hr workweek job where she was getting assloads of designer for free id simply become an extremely supportive boyfriend and if she ended up climbing the ladder i would retire and continue to support her from home like
its not difficult
Idk I think if they missed my bday I might be a bit upset
Ok I see you twice a week are u having fun are u feeling good? Great I love u
You're stronger than I am, simple as
Ah yes so she could become like miranda (three divorces and two kids she doesnt see)
U gotta have more trust and faith in ur baddie fashion gf digs idk what to tell u but that wouldn't happen with me
Miranda is a sigma male
Miranda ended up like Miranda because she had to fight for every inch
I dont think its about trust and faith here miranda isnt untrustworthy or unfaithful she isnt present
No im saying being faithful to and trusting your baddie fashion gf
Waaaaa she missed my birthday ok somebody had a completely healthy childhood
Bro was so afraid he was going to lose her that he just lashed out at her decisions at every single turn and diminished her agency. That's why she fucked the mentalist
I mean she didnt just miss hiss birthday she missed alot
god forbid someone prioritize their career right after college
Thats totally fine! Dont string a partner along when you do it!
i think bof of them are cool
god forbid a man support his gf and her nascent career
and hot
They began their relationship with a different set of expectations and when she started working for miranda those changed, but in stead of dumping him she kept it going
He was putting andy in a position where she had to fight tooth and nail at work, and then defend herself from him and her friends like i would have killed him with hammers at the 50 minute mark
he could've dumped her too??
He did!
you dump her???
And she fought him on it!
god forbid a woman try to have it all :xd:
Then she fucked the mentalist .5 secodns later
Ok she should have done that shit sooner!
Listen i love anne, i love a career driven woman, Nate was a titty baby, i just dont think you can be as reductive as to say “nate was bitch and should have been thrown of the empire state building”
what if i wanna
Ok i hear you and I totally see where you're coming from here digs
But nate is a bitch and deserves that drop
:hayao:
I’m just saying remind me to never date any of you mf’s
Fun silly movie i have seen like 3 times
I will say the book is nominally more sympathetic to the boyfriend and less sympathetic to miranda - it has been nearly two decades since reading so I may be misdemeanor
I have never thought nearly this hard about it
in the book he's an inner city teacher vs chef and he's fairly supportive of her using the job as a stepping stone to her doing more """meaningful""" writing
his criticisms of her take on an added layer of implying she's a sellout and increasingly out of touch as she spends more time with miranda etc
it does reach the same point (him forcing her to choose between a relationship and career) but the book sells the idea of andi being corrupted somehow more effectively
separate note gisele ate her cameo
I havent watched this flick since 06, worth a revisit? Think I gave it a 4/10 when I was 11
That’s unfair it’s definitely at least a :isaac:
If you’re over 18 your bday doesn’t matter. What adult with a real career has to celebrate their bday on the actual day? If my bday happens on a Wednesday I might never even celebrate it
i havent seen my bf in 3 weeks im normal abt it
This but genuinely
i've seen it prolly over 10 times i think
Ya at least, it’s definitely one of my go to comfort movies
but 0 times in the past 8 years
Ludwin has anyone said you look like the boyfriend yet in this thread
front loaded it
not since i got my hair cut :/
need to return to long so moms can tell me i look like entrourage guy agaijn
SAVE MY CURLS!!!
Oh my gosh you do
Devil wears prada and legally blonde are my 80 year old, very masc, vietnam vet Dad's favorite movies
How does he feel about the boyfriend
Has he seen Election with Reese Witherspoon?
I love TDWP. It's workplace drama that happens to be about fashion with good acting, writing and production. The clothes in the title sequence are a bit outdated but the characters' hold up.
Compare it to 13 Going on 30 (2006)! :idonotseeit:
InStyle
The Outfits From 13 Going on 30 Are Basically Perfect ]
On the day of the film's 15th anniversary, 13 Going on 30's costume designer talked to InStyle about the movie's most important looks.
her friends generally are the real villains
the scene where they play keep-away with her phone
I would have been like "ok cool will never see y'all again"
Genuinely friendship destroying behavior AND after giving them all that free shit NO SIR
That group looks like 30s-40s. 😤
the actors seemed it
but I think canonically they're in their 20s
I haven't seen this since it came out. I remember thinking it was pretty meh.
it's ok, it's kinda a vibes and cultural cache movie
13go30 is so good
watching the hulk stick his tongue out to show that it's razzle red
like the way he does it is crazy
i just recently learned about uptown girls being free on youtube
need to watch the whole thing but the few scenes i did watch were very good
I think one of the hardest parts of adult life is learning that your fun party friends you have in your early 20s may not have your best interests at heart when it comes to trying to navigate the career world
Anyway you guys wanna do a watch oarty of this tonight
Absolutely
Should still be on HBO in US.
