In what situations would you wear a blazer or sportcoat?

I like the idea of getting a blazer or a sport coat because I like how they look but I'm worried I won't have much of a reason to wear one. I'm not sure if I'd get away with wearing one to work... So I'm curious for people who wear blazers/sport coats regularly or semi regularly what kind of situations will you wear one in?

At work, at home, to the grocery store, in the shower, wherever. Love having a jacket on. I “overdress” for work, and it was about a month of getting comments, but now everyone’s used to it and if I don’t wear a jacket people are like, “you okay?” Changing something is always going to draw attention, but you just gotta put on what you like and people will get used to it. You can also find jackets in more casual materials and textures, features like patch pockets, etc that won’t read so stuffy. But really you gotta try stuff on and see how it feels. Scroll through #waywt to find people wearing jackets casually, and let us know what you like. We can help you find the language for what you’re looking for if you want

I have a quasi professional local government gig. Trying to normalize situations in which I wear a blazer myself. No dress code in my office, but for slightly formal meetings I'll try to follow the Derek Guy guidelines and bust out a textured patch pocket type blazer, paired with dark wash high rise jeans or chinos. Mainly for meetings with biz owners or architects, contractors, engineers, gov officials, etc. Virtually no one, other than elected officials or Dept heads wear suiting. Engineers, architects, planners, code enforcement folks, developers and 99% of city staff mainly wearing the lululemon athleisure type trousers, polos and quarter zips. I'm in a smaller midwestern city, but since I've gotten more intentional about jawns, it's been interesting to note that its the rare MF'r I see wearing anything other than relatively upscale mall brand stuff. Ultimately, no one gives a shit. And if they do, who cares. Jawns is niche. Dress for yourself. Obvs, if you live in a bigger city, YMMV. Out here in the sticks, it's Von Maur and Dillards and Nordstroms all the way down. Cremieux. Cole Haan. Perry Ellis. Hickey Freeman. Murano. And MAYBE the oddball local suit shops that sell their own brand.

"in what situations-" many. i wfh so have the luxury of wearing whatever but found i like tailoring and eventually realized that it doesn't have to be worn in just formal contexts, as in this essay https://alittlebitofrest.com/2023/02/19/what-is-an-occasion/

What Is An Occasion?
Is getting boba an Occasion? Yes! Is it dumb to wear a cool fit to do it? No! You can bet your ass I’m going to wear clothes I love to do a thing I enjoy.

like others have said, see how others are wearing them (kyn had a good list to which I'd add @sioku) and moreso what's appealing about them to you. if you've never owned one i'd try one on just to see how it feels to you; plenty of things look cool but feel annoying/awkward in practice

Thanks for the advice everyone! Something extra I was wondering, where should the end of a blazer/sports coat rest on the body? I've tried on a few today but I get the feeling they're all too long on me. At least the sleeves I could get shortened but I'm not as sure about the length...

it depends on the jacket and to an extent the fit itself; the blazer (left) is a more 'traditional" length while the sportcoat (right) is intentionally long and oversized, inspired by the 1990s

you can take pictures while wearing the jackets - front shot and side shot, ideally arms at your sides - and post them (probably want a new thread for visibility) to get a second take
