Summer Capsule Wardrobe

I have no wardrobe right now. I'm trying to figure out what clothes I'm going to buy for this (and ideally the next few) summers. My total budget for everything is $500 because I'm still in high school and saving for other shit, but I'm willing to go beyond that even if it means waiting for a few paychecks. I'm nowhere near finding "my style" or any style for that matter, and I'm not even completely sure what I want to wear, I just know I want to dress better. I plan on buying all white BB550s and AF1s and white half calf socks to kick off my wardrobe with versatile footwear.
I know I want to wear shorts that don't need a belt, and tees that aren't baggy. I like how swim trunks look with the floral designs and shit but minus the mesh. I think if I had like 5 of those to alternate with a plain white tee that doesn't show my nips it could look nice.

I'm not sure if it matters but I currently dress in random t shirts and black polyester shorts, with black adidas slides and black half calf running socks. yes this is how cooked i am 😭 So my question is: do you think white tees + board shorts with the white kicks would look good? and if so any brand recs?

My only caution with shoes is that air force 1s and the new balance are basically similar enough to fit the same niche. I would suggest buying 1 or the other and something else, a clog, a sandal, a boot, loafer, etc. That way you have something else to wear besides sneaker in summer

thats intentional shoe rotation makes em last longer I actually was considering buying clogs as a slide or a house slipper

When your budget is this limited something is gonna have to give and 2 sneakers of the same design might not be the most important thing

Get what you like and what fits your foot, nike is notorious for being narrow

White T shirt and anything tends to work

Ok lets back up for a second $500 to build a whole wardrobe is pretty hard, but good news you shouldn’t be buying everything all at once. Building a wardrobe and an understanding of your style is a long process
LonesomeBuilder
LonesomeBuilderOP•2w ago
I wish I could skip to the end of that process as a broke hs student

Not to be corny, but its about the journey Its gonna take time and thats ok

LonesomeBuilderOP•2w ago
Well I hate anything remotely formal I'd rather die than own a pair of chinos Chinos are ugly as shit imo before i learned about this discord i couldn't believe my eyes while i read the basic bastard wardrobe However, I do like wearing full on suits but i dont like anything in between so i will dress for an occasion

Ok also dont like the super low shoes like common projects or vans authentics I feel like stockier stuff looks.. better on me as a man xd
Shrimp
Shrimp•2w ago
Thats fine, there are lots of big shoes. I don’t know if being a man makes too much of a difference as much as the overall style you’re aiming at

Right but avoiding being insensitive and being banned And honestly theres better ways to describe it

I get that you’re a young dude without too much experience in the world, but I can tell you affirmatively that gay people dress in more than one way. This is an inclusive community and you’ll be swiftly banned by framing arguments like that You’re good. Stick to images

this is generally good advice in a vacuum but may not be the best rec in context. there's a chance that for OP that a chunky white sneaker is his preference and goes with his lifestyle; if so then he's already got a head start on finding what he likes even if it isn't the usual line of thinking for building a starter wardrobe but yeah @LonesomeBuilder check on the discord (or on social media; look up #ootd and #waywt on Instagram or tiktok if you have either) and save pics of the fits you like

done image hunting, part of the issue is I can't find/don't even know exactly what I want yet. also im not rly finding much stuff i like. I know some of these images are stock images, my bad.

brh i didnt mean to send that 6/8 images down I'm guessing theres a billion threads on basic tee brand recs Yeah I mean thats it Basic solid color tees, not oversized and NOT graphic solid color or floral shorts white kicks/socks I really like that look What you think @shrimpy (bad po Kung Fu Panda 4)

zeometer•2w ago
the important thing is what you think since you're the one wearing the clothes, dealing with the heat of the summer, and doing whatever i'm not a high school student so i do not have the inside track on how people will react but as long as you like it, that's what matters

and realistically you could achieve this look by shopping entirely secondhand, hitting uniqlo / a&f / zara, or browsing SSENSE & Mr. Porter by tshirt & short categories. its really up to u on what u fw most

All this solidifies to me is that you should not be in a rush to spend the $500. It sounds a lot like you’re still figuring out what you like. Just be patient! Buy something, wear it a few times, figure out what you like and don’t like about each piece and go from there. Vintage stores are a great way to get clothes for cheap and were a great way for me to explore my style when I was in school and had a lot less money
anasthesia-
anasthesia-•2w ago
benefit of secondhand is sick ass graphic tees at your local thrift store
Garet
Garet•2w ago
Graphic tees and Hawaiian shirts are super easy to find there as well Hell yea u right for this
zeometer
zeometer•2w ago
also whatever you do, try stuff on/buy stuff you can easily return combinations of clothes can sound good in your head but then look not as good once you put them on together
anasthesia-
anasthesia-•2w ago
if you’ve got a big enough goodwill/similar you can probably assemble 2-3 fits for ~30-50 bucks and try combos in store
Shrimp
Shrimp•2w ago
To add to this, i shop about 75% second hand and I’m not shopping on a tight budget. Its just a great way to get your money to go further and buy some nicer things that are typically super expensive new
