Plasmashell consuming way too much ram

Good Day Guys,

is someone experiencing this same behavior of Plasmashell consuming way too many resources? 17GB of RAM. ( attached screenshot).

I rebooted and it is good now but i wanted log this out in case this turns out to be a bug.

if someone knows how can i prevent this in the future, will be very appreciated.

Solution

Do system update, make sure Nvidia driver version is "570.153.02" they claim to have fixed it in that one. Unless you having a memory leak due to some other issue.

It's a memory leak happening I believe, I've had similar with "kwin_wayland" going up in memory usage and not dropping it (though it didn't always do it only if you locked your system and came back to it, then the RAM leak would start but would take at least few hours to fill up the RAM. Restarting computer fixes it till you lock or logout and log-back in again), turned out to be an issue with Nvidia drivers, something to do with Wayland when you also use multiple monitors. What's your Nvidia driver version?

@Krazykov Thanks for the quick and details answer. I ran the ujust update command and rebooted. I am seeing now the version you mention. 570.153.02 . I will keep and eye , if the issue happens again. I was unaware on how to re-create it , you provided a great hint. I do use multiple screens. I also noticed that i started having issues with the second screen , when coming from a screen lock, sometimes i couldn't visually fit the browser properly, there was some visual misplacement. I noticed the the ram was climbing, but i thought it was my normal usage, until it was obviously too high, also the PC locked several times during the day. I think all matches your description. I will try reproducing and update if it happens again. If not i will mark it as resolved.

@baalmortum No worries, hopefully that fixes it. I'm fairly new to all this as well just switched to Linux permanently few weeks ago, and this issue was really bugging me for awhile. Then came across this https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496469 where people talked about it and looks like it was an issue since last year but its good timing for us Nvidia finally dropped a fix for it about a week ago. Also this was only a problem when using Wayland with KDE apparently, with Gnome it was fine.

thanks for the bug reference. I think was not researching in the right place. Hope that's it.I am also new to this and was very afraid about Nvidia compatibility before switching. so far gaming all is good my problems all been in the OS graphical behavior. The rest i am very happy.

Yeah for my next PC I'm definitely going with AMD if I'm to stick with Linux (less problems), for now stuck with RTX2070 with this Asus ROG laptop lol, but will try make it work. Games run pretty well though, some like War Thunder/Elite Dangerous actually run better than they did on Windows for me.

Same, i am mainly playing the witcher and POE and Baldurs Gate 3, no issues at all. Also some blizzard games. Smoothly. but i will be AMD planning on selling the Video card and get one RX
