Brands with interesting earthy dyes
Ok kind of random. I really love the texture and color of Story mfgs new naturally dyed jackets, I was also thinking about this neat dye pattern on this shirt from waywt shrimpy posted recently. These examples are all pretty different looking, but the vibe is there. While I can't find more examples right now something I have really been fucking with recently is pretty and earthy dye applications.
In particular I am looking for more brands that have muted and natural color palettes, unevenly applied colors/gradients (this one is optional, and can be subtle), and matte textures. I know there are some high end brands like EK and the earlier mentioned Story mfg line making this stuff now, but I am looking for brands that have built up a backlog I can look for secondhand, because my max budget is probably only < 100-150 and maybe a little more for outerwear.
This seems like also a pretty DIYable vibe, especially considering my budget, so if anyone has tried to achieve something like this that would be cool to know too!

botantical dying, mud dying, sun fading are all DIYs that are pretty easy to do
I recommend getting some kind of dye fixer when you add any dyes so that they dont bleed into other clothes
the shirt above wass pretty expensive, but the process isnt
ziggy chen comes to mind
but really this is fairly easy to do with rit dye in charcoal gray and dark brown
if you start with a heavy thing like gray denim and you dye it badly, the dye will come out streaky and cool
and if you don’t like how the first dye attempt turned out you can always just do it again
i think diy is really rewarding so give it a try!!

Yeah! that’s what I was thinking. I just worry about dying with natural sources bleeding or staining my other clothes
I am sure there is a lot of documentation out there on how to avoid that tho
use a dye fixer like shrimp said
don’t be like story mfg
tea and coffee dyeing as well, especially considering you can choose how much of the liquid to drink first lol
Yes that’s what I need to go google
I read the first message, responded, and then read the second message
._.
Which kind of answered my response
I’ve done some black walnut dyeing as well if you’re in the right geographic area and it’s pretty easy
Ziggy stuff is way over budget but could be a good thing to look at for inspo as you start dyeing stuff
And please please please use a mordant
Jiyongkim does sunfaded garments, they sometimes pop up for relatively cheap secondhand
I like the look of these, and also think after reading through through this I’ll probably try to DIY some stuff

Really like these flowy sun bleached pants
Post Imperial does a lot, not really in budget but you can hunt them down secondhand
usually not in brown tones but Blue Blue Japan is known for funky indigo dye jobs. The old stuff is very slim/trim but the stuff from the past few years is relaxed and pretty accomodating in fit
maybe tefkit? i forget if they do stuff other than indigo
this website navigation is actually the worst thing I have ever seen
is the intention that you have to pan around by dragging with your mouse

good god
the pieces are cool tho

this sky shirt is nice
yes
Tender stuff is a bit wonky and weird but they do some cool dyeing.
another brand on the price too high but good inspo
Earth\Studies
nono nevermind. they dont do natural textures like this nvm
but i'll leave it up bc you might find it neat

Kinda just conventional blanks but with some cool natural dyes
I’ve been wanting to get a t shirt to see what the colors look like in person
Also decently budget friendly for naturally dyed stuff but I believe they are made to order so it may take a bit for it to actually get to you
Also can look up community dye baths in your area. I know of one in LA i need to find the name of but you can get clothes you might not like color of overdyed a bunch of different colors
If you happen to be in the northeast in the states this place does some awesome dye baths and does a few different colored dye lots each month
You can ship things over to them to get dyed - I have been searching for some good candidates to send them myself

Suay?
Wait this is kind of sick
If I use something like that should I apply the mordant/dye set myself after receiving it back?
Their site doesn’t mention any treatment of the garments after dying
Wait nvm google says the mordant is applied before the dye
The tefkit dandelion jeans are something I’ve wanted for a minute
Also just click on any piece and navigate from there and the website is survivable
I have tefkit jeans they are good that is all kthxbye
Yeah I think you figured it out but they pretty much handle everything
You end up with really custom looking pieces and can ship them cheap thrift items, uniqlo pieces, etc
Maybe the best cost effective way to get this sort of look imo
Yeah I might give it a try, possibly bundle shipping on a few things at once
Thanks for the recommendation!
You should share before and after photos if you do it!
The colors for this month (which are pretty cool) should be wrapping up soon so they should announce the next batches in the next week or so if I had to guess
I’ll share when I get around to it
Want to make sure I gather some cool pieces to dye first
No pressure
Quick question! I got some 11:11 natural dye linen shirts and they stain easily and color bleed with washing. Anyway to protect against natural dyes being so fragile?
washing with white vinegar will help prevent additional color loss
Thanks!
Wondering if there are any professional companies that you can send you expensive natural dye clothing to for them to set it for you
Getting them dry cleaned could help prevent color loss
If they are able to be dry cleaned
reawakening the thread as I might be using this dye company in the near future, I have been looking at some vintage brooks brothers shetland sweaters and see a few secondhand in this yellow colorway I do not find appealing at all, but yellow would be pretty easy to dye to a nice earth tone. I know dying inherently requires some agitation and heat, and I worry about shrinking or felting. The websites list of fibers does include wool, but all their examples seem to be cotton or linen. Do you have any experience dying wool with them or would you worry about a shetland being damaged?

also these sweaters would be very thick so there is just a lot of fiber for dye to permeate
I have not dyed wool with them, no. But it's a fair question and you're right to have some concern about it
It totally can be dyed but I would encourage you to reach out to them directly to understand how comfortable they are dying wool and what sort of steps they take to avoid shrinking or felting.
There's a chance you may need to block the sweater afterwards, which is not a big deal if you have done it before
If they can't do it, you can totally do it yourself too. There are a lot of great dye kits and sort of "recipes" to get different colors
gotcha
I ask because these yellow ones run way cheaper then the nice brown colors
I am really only interested in natural dyes personally but synthetic dyes are super easy and available as well
No totally makes sense
but if dying is reasonable then I will pull the trigger if a good deal shows up
thank you!!
Yeah it's a fun DIY project too if they aren't comfortable doing it for you
And you can get some friends together and do a little dye bath party
Also plugging tezomeya because they are cool and kind ppl and was just talking about them in another thread. Simple tees but all natural dyes and many things are loopwheeled as well

I saw you mention them in the tshirt thread and already have a bunch of their stuff in my other tab haha
Some really nice stuff
Snagged one off Poshmark to test the fit, awesome tee and will probably be buying some of their dyed ones in the future

Very good recommendation, thanks
I would say this is now a good candidate for a dye bath but the color of the raw cotton is actually really pretty
Awesome! So glad you were able to find one and enjoy it
Yeah the raw cotton color by itself is so nice I think
What size did you get? Any chance you can share measurements if it’s a 175cm?
185cm, I can totally share measurements give me a second
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
its very long, so I wear it tucked in
laid flat pit2pit is 22"
shoulder is 19"
length from the center of the neck is 27-29 depending on if you measure off the front of the neck or the back
and the actual sleeve bit is 9 inches from shoulder seam to end of sleeve
Thank you! Do they stretch when you wear them? Particularly the chest area
it is a very flow-y knit so it certainly drapes on the body
those masurements fit oversized on me so it doesn't really "stretch" per se when I wear it
if that makes sense
Did they shrink at all when you washed them?
It does ty
since I got it used I assume it was already washed
idk if they say they prewash the tees on their site or not
also I am not familiar with the expected shrinkage of loopwheel tees?
Ah okay
Thanks so much have a good weekend
