Three examples of the silliness I'm on + one to prove I actually can dress myself.

My goal this year is to push past basic menswear and find a style that stays true to my love of menswear but is more casual and - critically - is interesting. I've really been drawn to the flexibility ivy style offers on this front. At least as an ethos where I can do my own thing with it. So three of these are me doing something new (to me) while the far left fit is just my safe, basic take on red, white, and blue for the 4th (drinks at a nice restaurant). I'm mostly just sharing some of the combinations I've kinda liked. But, as always, I'm here for any feedback anyone has.

of the four i like 1 the most (and would prefer it more with black loafers) there are individual elements to 2/3 that i like but imo they feel unfocused, same with 4 there's lots of ways to branch out from ivy but what does "interesting" and "more casual" look like to you visually? if you need pics check #waywt and #waywt-highlights and #inspiration

the v neck is bricking these but the shorts peacoat interaction also ain’t it 4 could work in terms of proportions but the v and the matchiness of the blazer and shorts also aren’t working for me

ocbd instead of v neck would be a marked improvement for 2/3/4 imo

So my inspiration for the shorts and topcoat comes from the cover of Take Ivy (far right). I absolutely love this look:

He's wearing a trench here, it seems. But I'm more interested in adapting the topcoat in the same spirit. It has a sporting look to me I think could work (though, while I kinda like what I did here, I do feel its off too) Some of these Drake's looks really work for me.

It reminds me of a fit I had a few years ago. I could see tweaking things more in the Drake's direction:

sure and there’s plenty of inspo to take from take ivy he’s wearing a collared shirt and the colors work better i still think it’s not great but that’s because my brain errors out when i see medium-heavy coat, shorts and loafers

idk what to tell you zeo your shit works better than the above examples the (tweed?) jacket doesn’t feel as out of place and the colors and proportions are good socks help also it’s ok to not nail it the first time you try a new thing the road to “i feel good about what im doing here” is paved with bricked fits
kstocks

Yeah part of the issue with the jacket and shorts here is it's a heavy fabric with shorts The trench works because it's a light fabric. It's something you could wear in spring or summer in certain climates Also the trench is something you wear when it rains. Your coat is something you wear when it's cold. I think it's awesome to derive inspiration from Take Ivy as a lot of people do, just trying to further explain why this fit departs from the inspo in a way that doesn't work for me
zeometer
zeometer3mo ago
that was a joke but you're gucci and right as usual will also echo the fact that this isn't an overnight change; trying fits over time, recognizing things in clothes or inspiration pictures that you like, and asking for and applying feedback are what solidifies your tastes as yours specifically

also since we’re here, the darker base layer in 4 w the lighter jacket is something that’s hard to make look good easily!

This makes sense to me. I'm almost embarrassed to even say it but, in addition to Take Ivy, I've been pulling a ton of inspo from Thom Browne. I am generally antagonistic towards the history of conservatism and privilege tied to traditional campus Ivy style. And Thom is subversive with the form such that it makes me comfortable playing with menswear in a way that doesn't make me feel like a regressive. But also Thom Browne has his own baggage. So. All of this is a preamble to ask how you think these fits are working (or maybe they don’t for you, no one is saying Thom is infallible). But I’m drawn to all of these looks:

There's one more I thought i saved and can't find. Heavy wool overcoat with shorts. But I think they're all doing what you're saying. They're matching weights. But the first seems to offset the heavy weight of the chesterfield with the lightness of its color. Which is a different but equal balance.

I like lots of Thom Browne but these are not my favorite looks of his That said, wear what you like. Just giving feedback

This is why I'm grateful this place exists. Never great to hear you're bricking a look. But god it helps.

a few thoughts/other things to look at - regarding the cultural baggage associated with ivy style there's a lot that could he said, and this does a better job than i could including brands/collections that subverted the style including thom browne https://onesizefitsall.substack.com/p/systematic-racism-birthed-ivy-style - related but if you haven't read Black Ivy it's also worth it, both from a cultural standpoint if interested and also for inspo in putting together fits you may also enjoy the following inspo threads: https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1372017356595003413 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1367889073812934688 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1339610180614094912 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1328890299292061786 plus most cirque posts in inspo (discord search in:inspiration from:@circleframes)

i mean yeah we love thom here but echoing kstocks these are def not my favorite thom looks, though they’re also all meaningfully different executions than you have above if you hadn’t explicitly asked for feedback, you wouldn’t have gotten it - and it’s great that you did. getting feedback different than what you were hoping for is always hard but being challenged by something is the feeling of learning it.
