capacitors basic doubt

in this parallel plate capacitor, won't the field be confined in the space bw the plates. why would any field exist outside then? the soln does it by considering the system to be like a dipole. fringing effects can be neglected right?

oh wait i jus read that the plates are of small size which means fringing cant be neglected? plus, if we had an ideal capacitor the ans would've been zero, right?
