Water flicker with shaders
Exactly title, water is flickering when I enable complementary unbound or reimagined
The issue is basically this: https://gitlab.com/distant-horizons-team/distant-horizons/-/issues/1086
My friend has the exact same issue so I'm guessing its a mod issue or incompatibility??

I am no expert, but I am pretty sure that this problem is from the shaders and its devs.
I would just report it there and wait for the next version
ok so I tested multiple shaders like Complementary Unbound and reimagined, rethinking voxels and Complementary + Euphoria patches and the problem is still there, basically only water LOD is flickering
atp I don't think its the shader
Does this happen without shaders?
no, only with shaders
I don't know what I am talking about, but wouldn't that be a problem with the DH API for shaders? I mean, that is the only thing all these shaders have in common when it comes to DH, right?
I mean that makes sense but how do you even fix this?
also if the problem is with dh then this problem would be more wide spread no?
That is, in fact, my question also. Commonly, in software in general, your configuration may be unique in such a way that enables the problem. Well, you let devs know, and they take care of the rest...
In this point, I would try to identify everytging I have done to my mc installation, launcher, configs, and things like that, maybe try to recreate it on another device, maybe delete everything and install it again, so I can find the cause? This is just my first thought, and the one I would have made if I were you.
Do not take anything from that as fact, though, as it all could be not applicable to your situation! I just wanted to present my thought process!
yeah I understand, I did replicate the issue on my friend's pc with the bare minimum of mods to get dh and shaders working and everything on my end was fresh installed
I will test some more tomorrow and I will update
This is likely a side effect of forward rendering in packs like Complementary and its "children". I would consider testing with other packs, specifically ones that uses deferred rendering, I don't remember off the top of my head, to see if this is an issue between those two rendering methods.
Sildurs is deferred, but I don't remember if it has Distant Horizons support yet.
As of like almost a month ago, it does not have HD support
I do not get it, honestly. There are devs who update their shaderpack regularly, but do not add DH support, which would make their packs 10 times more popular.
Sometimes, they don't want to be more popular. See Bliss for example. It got too popular, Xonk (the dev) struggles to keep up with help requests coming from people who downloaded the wrong version of the pack.
Makes sense..
Reinstalled everything clean again and tried some more shaders, I don't know if they use a deferred rendering tho as I couldn't find much about it
Mods:
Fabric API 0.129.0
Iris Shaders 1.9.1
Sodium 0.6.13
DH 2.3.4-b
On 1.21.8 and 1.21.6
Shaders:
BLISS - no dh support, says so in chat
BSL - lod water flicker
Solas - lod water flicker
Stracciatella -The shaderpack failed to load! says in chat
rethinking voxels - lod water flicker
Unbound + Euphoria - lod water flicker
Unbound & Reimagined - lod water flicker
I like vanilla - lod water flicker
I will record a clip of the problem rn
You must have downloaded an old Bliss version
hmm
lemme look again
you are right
I got the latest version from github but the flickering is still there
Seems to be a more common issue with shaders since 2.3 https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1349019163762491402 https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1319342462950445106 https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1363533883143880864 https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1349072982542254141
so it is a wide spread issue then
what can we do then?
Hey, Sorry for hijacking the thread but I figured it'd be a better idea to report here rather than making a new one for this exact same issue
Minecraft 1.21.8
DH 2.3.4-b
all of the newest Sodium/iris/Fabric API from Modrinth
Bliss shaders, Tried both stable and Unstable
Exact same issue here
Would it possibly be an issue with this specific version of MC/DH?
As mentioned by the OP, Issue doesn't surface when shaders are disabled
Also seems like it's only happening to the bodies of water that are further away rather than ones within vanilla render distance
Happens regardless of size of said body of water and seemingly at random locations
Also having this issue! Looks exactly like this and I've tweaked what seems like a million settings and nothing is fixing it
My best guess is that it's something to do with the way that water reflects, because disabling water reflections in complementary shaders has fixed it
I'd like to add the observation that I believe it's actually entire chunks flickering
Not just a random amount of water
Yup!!
Same issue
I'm hoping that maybe it's just a problem with this combination of versions
Is there a fix? I have this issue on all my shaders Iris and all.
im having this exact same issue
there doesnt seem to be a specific circumstance that causes it to happen (since it works with multiple shaders) so im a bit confused why this isnt a bigger issue
im on 1.20.1 quilt
I have found a random reddit thread saying this doesn't happen in 2.2.1 -A but I'm not sure if it's compatible with 1.21.8 otherwise I would have tried it
https://www.answeroverflow.com/m/1349019163762491402
Also this is a thing
its not compatible with 1.21.8
Thats this thread: https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1349019163762491402
ah
answeroverflow publishes answered threads online so google can index them
What I've noticed in general is that DH doesn't like shaders in LOD waters, LOD waters are completely black through glass, Not sure if Continuity contributes but hey, It's there for me
Ofc none of these happen without shaders
This is neat actually I didn't know
Might be relevant to mention that said water is a frozen lake, It completely renders it as a black blob water and ice as a whole behind the glass
Bliss and complementary at least still have this issue
