I have never fit a dress shirt, I am begging for help on where to get them. I am 5'9" with an 18" ne
Here are my measurements:
Height: 5'9" Weight: 160lbs
Neck: 17.5"
Chest: 38"
Waist: 37"
Arm Length: 30"
I am so tired of dressing like crap, I even tried to get some tailored clothes once and the measurements still were not like great (after they measured me). Are my proportions that screwed up? I also have short thighs which compounds things too.

Hi @astorian! For better answers, include:
- Reference pictures
- Budget in numbers
- Specific measurements
- Openness to buying secondhand and/or online
- Location: country/continent is fine
- Timing/urgency
uh
budget?
i feel like this is a problem for a tailor+otr to fix or mtm brand
if your tailor fucked up get a new tailor
No budget constraints, but I dont need anything thats like crazy expensive. But you think with my measurements im just absolutely gonna need custom shirts?
i just think people get in their heads about this shit too much and that no body is undressable
Do you have a shirt that you could put on and post a picture of
i’m probably not the best resource for this specific issue because i prefer things oversized, your chest:waist seems like it might require specific input but shouldn’t be impossible to accommodate
neck and shoulders are probably harder to alter than taking in the chest or waist to fit so id prioritize those in otr
idk man do you know what a 17.5" inch neck is like when you are 5'9" and normal weight? Literally ordered a "tailored" shirt from Charles tyrwhitt, the neck made it so the shirt was sized at extra large and it was fucking huge because im normal height / weight
uh
No I don’t know what this is like because numbers don’t mean anythinf to me
if you want to be combative and/or told you have an evil weird body go off but we’re trying to help
context ^. I am a small in many shirts, medium in many shirts. However this neck size is an XL lol. it sucks

fucks sake
Yeah Im not reading that bro sorry
glhf
Im not being combative?? What is happening here wtf
I just want to see what you look like in a shirt that you currently have
I’m a visual advice giver
17.5" at 160 5'9 is not that far off average
oh really? It seems like its a massive problem for buying clothes, my size is like small / medium, my neck in a lot of clothes is like XL lol. Do you have any rec's for where I should be looking then?
gonna be hard to judge without posting a pic
is your neck 30” or 17.5”
op says 30
sorry
its 17.5" neck with a 30" arm length
i maintain your best options are
- size for your neck and shoulder and get the rest tailored
- mtm/custom
- size for your chest and waist and wear several buttons open in a cool slutty way
- rick owens office shirt
pic will help greatly
i would also look into dress shirts which use numeric sizing (17.5/34 and the like), such as this one https://jpressonline.com/products/new-white-oxford-button-down-classic-fit
J. PRESS
Oxford Cloth Button Down Dress Shirt
Shop our Classic Ivy Style Dress Shirts & browse our collection of Suits, Trousers, Sportswear and more.
find a shirt that fits your neck/sleeve length and then shop around for a tailor that is willing to take in the chest/width to your desired width
these are also good options @astorian
I did size for my neck on this Charles tyrwhitt shirt i just got. However it was so large, like im talking the neck fit but the length of the collar to the bottom of my shirt were from my neck to my thighs, like a dress. Is there a limit as to how much they can shorten legth by at a tailor? Or is it possible
different brands will cut the body of the shirt in different ways (j.crew and banana republic all tend to be wider unless the shirt is explicitly labeled "slim fit") - you may need to go through a few brands (polo, brooks brothers, buck mason, proper cloth if you want more customization, etc). while traditional dress shirts are meant to be tucked into dress pants, a tailor may be willing (key word) to shorten it to your liking, it just requires asking
I'm 5'9" with around a 17" neck. I think one thing you have to accept is that slim shirts are probably not going to work for you, but that's really the only tough part I can imagine.
if you have no budget just get something mtm from proper cloth
only if hes in dc, chicago, or nyc tbh
im in NYC, so plenty of options!
even better, there are a dozen places you can walk in and get a mtm dress shirt ordered in 15 minutes from an expert
also worth noting that CT slim fit isn't that slim
but again, cant really comment on what u can tailor unless u post a photo
if u dont want to, then MTM might be ur best option
I have really unusual proportions, and had the best luck with going to an in-person MTM place and having shirts and stuff made to my exact measurements
but yeah, definitely post a pic if you can. it's possible that you're being harsher on yourself/your fit than you need to be, and folks here can tell you it's fine. or suggest adjustments you can make
Looks fine but I don't think that's a shirt sizing/tailoring thing or something to expect either of those to solve
Also would be more relevant to post a pic in the CT and tailored shirts you've mentioned
seconding what awz already said, the t-shirt pic looked totally fine. regarding the stomach comment: in the history of tailoring/suits, the vast majority of suit-wearers have had (and currently have, and will in the future have) stomachs that aren't flat. a person absolutely doesn't need a flat stomach to look great in tailored clothes (or in anything else they want to wear!)
Ok let me post a pic on one sec
So this fits ok I think, the neck theres no shot, but the rest I THINK is ok. However I hate with a passion the side profile. I tend to hold my fat right below my belly button. Is there any hope of mitigating with tailoring? I am trying to lose 5-10 pounds too.

I think a little looser might be better in the chest
It fits in the shoulders by my eye
first of all, your body is totally fine. love how nice and straight/wide the pants look from the front! definitely wish they looked similar from the side. but that's 100% a problem with the pants, not you, and yes it's fixable (without needing to change your body fyi)
second, I'm not one of the tailored clothing experts here, so if they come in and contradict my input, listen to them not me lol
my first thought is: the pants are too long. how does the drape of the pants down the front of your body change when you cuff them (while wearing the correct shoes with them)? it'd be great if just hemming them up is a satisfying enough fix
the torso of the shirt looks a bit too snug to me; I'd want to let it out a bit, personally
