Immich (beta) still does no real background sync

Is this expected?
I was under the impression that exactly beta would solve this:

have photos on your iphone (new, not yet synced)
open immich app
see that it takes a moment to "see" the new photos from iphone
see that it does start to sync
close the app
no matter how long you wait, it will never sync
leave the app open, active, in foreground, and the assets get synced

I thought this was exactly what beta timeline would do so much better?
If that is the case, it is not working for me.
If that is not the case, it might be one of the most important things missing so far
