It depends on what you mean by stay up. If you do 5 one year sleeps your workflow instance will "hibernate" for one year 5 times, yielding concurrency to other instances while it sleeps. It will awaken after every year and go back to sleep. The workflow does not use compute while it sleeps.

I find that the best way to debug a workflow is to run is to add additional steps and use their results messages as logs (this is my what I personally what I do when I do need to have more immediate logs). Logs do appear in workers observability but only when the workflow instance stops running which is not ideal.

This is not ideal but will get you live-ish logs for an instance (I don't recommend having this in production but while you test, it can be helpful)

I'm running a workflow that has many steps.
I need to make 300-400 api calls.
But these calls need to be rate limited, so I added a global limiter Durable Object
Calls to the DO also get counted in the 1000 limit
And I start hitting the invocation limit exceeded

I’ve had the same experience. Because of the subrequest limit, I had to split my task across multiple workflow instances and then manually track all their statuses just to determine when the parent job was finished. A 1000 limit makes sense for Workers, but definitely not for Workflows. Hopefully they raise it soon.
