I'm in same boat. Did some updates last nite and broke launching any game. Believe mine is gamescope related as well.

what's your gamescope version? I see this https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/1218 but it mentions the issue being fixed in gamescope 3.16.3 https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/1218#issuecomment-2906260876

since update to 3.14.2 I'm facing this error every time I running something through gamescope, it crashes immediately. It worked fine with 3.13.16 Here is an example with vkcube: No CAP_SYS_NIC...

Deck uses 3.16.1, I believe. I don't think users can change this though?

ALL games on Heroic failed to launch after I updated stuff in Steam Deck desktop mode. I even tried redownloading XCOM 2 all over again and still got the same error. Then I tried removing Heroic from Discover>Installed and installing it again immediately, everything finally works again.

To add to this, in game mode I can hear the music and it sounds like the game's running, I just cant see the game - it's a black screen

Since the above issue began occuring, I've had much better luck simply adding the .exe's of the various DRM-free games I have to Steam myself, basically only using Heroic for the download process

Doing this correctly enforces the Deck's FPS cap even with v-sync disabled in games. Launching through Heroic often ignores this.
