Are there any rules/consequence to using while loops in a step?

I want to retry a step but have timers that are dynamic and ever changing so wouldnt really work with the workflow step auto retry config. So i plan to sleep inside a while loop but unsure whether this would have unforeseen consequence as there is no documentation on this type of pattern?

It’s just code. As long as you don’t run into step limits, it doesn’t matter what flow control you use.

Something like p-map can be useful if you care about concurrency over a bunch of async tasks + simplifies failure handling: https://www.npmjs.com/package/p-map

but if you just need a while loop, use a while loop!

Just note that (this is not specific to Workflows) that

while (condition) { await step.do(...) }

while (condition) { await step.do(...) }

will block on each

before it iterates.

question about waitForEvent, sometimes, even the event is fired, the waitForEvent is still waiting. This happens to the workflow that has waited for more than 20 minutes, do I miss something? Is it because I put the waitForEvent inside a step.do?

it says it's not implemented locally, and in cloudflare steps continue to run.

So I am really confused about the use cases of Workflows vs Queues. Seems like anything you could do in one you could also do in the other. Are there specific parameters (like limits, costs, performance, etc.) that I should keep in mind when deciding?

I have a pattern I'm using now where a Consuming Worker is pulling events off a Queue and then it just starts a Workflow. Are there plans to support Workflows as Queue consumers, so we can drop the consuming Worker form the flow?

Hey @avenceslau We have been encountering Workflow instances that occasionally are terminating on their own while running and aren't throwing an error as expected. It seems to occur about once a day now, and it requires manual intervention for us to kick the workflow off again.

Essentially these Workflow instances appear to be receiving a "terminate" signal but we are not the ones initiating them. Any idea on what might be up?

No bridge to Cloudflare Workflows currently exists, but since the framework is open source, a Cloudflare world (https://useworkflow.dev/docs/deploying/world) is possible. Imo, the syntax is cleaner than the current CF class approach.

I started getting the following error when sending events to a Workflow Instance that is waiting. See attached for implementation of waitForEvent and sendEvent. This setup has been working fine up until now. This seems to only be an issue locally; deployed versions are working as expected.

I'm seeing a lot of persistent internal server errors when accessing the workflows dashboard.

Additionally, some steps still show as running, around 20 minutes after I terminated the instance. Is that expected?

fwiw this was probably caused by some bad workflow code I was testing that causes the step hang, but I wouldn't expect the dashboard to internal server error.

This blocks the things a lot.

Assume a workflow is used to remind after 30 days sign-up.
If 10k users sign up in a day or week...

That's it.. can't invoke any other workflow.

Is there any solution for this??

Workers are stateless and don't need to store state - Workflows are inherently stateful because we need to ensure that your instances always run in a timely fashion, even if some attempt fails (so we need to persist your step returns and metadata) - hence the limit, but we are working to potentially increase it even further :soontm:

i am using caches.default on a Worker to cache a R2 file being server. I see that the response headers show CACHE HIT and a Max Age. If I fetch it with Cache Control no-store using fetch, is it still being served the Cached R2 file ? Or is the request header overriding the Worker's Cache behaviour ? Thanks !

For now I only tested in local, thinking I don't even need to deploy it if I can't get it working local. Only thing I tried was setting the browser remote:true option which didn't (remarkably) make any difference, but crashed the whole miniflare process.

Does that suffice or would actually deploying the application help? I don't have the deployment set up right now but could get to it soon

Does a step fail silently if the returned amount is more than the 1MiB? Its the only conclusion i can reach as to why my step is constantly restarting.

Has anyone tried creating a flow where a Workflow is paused when an error occurs (after an appropriate number of retries), a user/client is notified of an issue, manual intervention occurs, then the Workflow is resumed from the same point (before the current step perhaps) to continue executing? This feels like it would be very involved to orchestrate, and I would need to call out to the REST API or another Worker to be able to pause the invocation from within

Something else I noticed: The success rate is much lower than 50%, maybe 20%. But its not per browser launch, its per wrangler launch (process?) meaning its sticky. If it works once, it works until the next restart, even across hot reloads. If I restart, I might have to try 5-6 times until I hit success. Maybe that helps diagnosing

I have my MAIN workflow with several steps. It's working fine as-is. In step N, it produces a file (sends it to R2). As soon as the file drops onto R2, I want another, independent workflow (Worker + DO + WF) to start.
