@Alanprime I am glad I bought one! The issues you faced I ran into similar items. Not a great first impression in my opinion. I am convinced whatever it ships with is broken in some weird way.

Hey guys, how are you? I'm having a problem with my infrared remote control receiver for my arduino ELEGO. It's properly connected, but the power led (the red one) isn't lighting up. How can i fix this?

everything looks wired ok, If you have a multi meter test to see if your getting voltage ont he gr pins.

I thought the problem was the receiver, but what I really want to do is get the hexadecimal code from the remote control, but it's not giving me the code, and I thought it was the hardware.

well it has a LED on the board, so Im thinking that it should be lit, maybe it only lights if it recives a signal?

I mean I use a libra pi, they are great, they do have gpio but nothing says you need to use it.I also love orange pi, and rock pi's. @Demon Lord of the Round Table
