No steam deck input on World War Z/WWZ

Device: Steam deck
Issue: Ok I’m not sure why this is happening, nor the solution, but I simply cannot get input from my steam deck on this game in particular. On regular steamos, the solution (iirc) was to use wine ge instead of proton ge. That doesn’t work for me on cachyos on steam deck for some reason. I have tried so many things I’m not sure where to go from here. Other inputs work, like if I connect my PlayStation controller or keyboard, but it’s just the steam deck controls that do not work.
