Bazzite installation fails at ostree container image deploy

I am trying to install Bazzite in a dual-boot setup with Windows, but the installation fails consistently at the following step:

ostree container image deploy
image=ghcr.io/ublue-os/bazzite-deck:stable
exited with code 1

The installer reaches the container image deploy stage and then fails with exit code 1.

I followed the official Bazzite installation guide exactly and also tested both automatic and custom (manual) partitioning, with the same result.

System / Setup

Boot mode: UEFI

Secure Boot: Disabled

Installer: Official Bazzite ISO (re-downloaded and re-written)

Partitioning

Tested both automatic and manual partitioning.

Manual setup:

Existing Windows EFI partition mounted as /boot/efi (not formatted)

New ext4 partition mounted as /

Windows NTFS partitions untouched

The installer accepts the partition layout without errors.

Networking

Wi-Fi connected successfully in the live environment

Network confirmed active before starting installation

USB tethering via phone also tested

The error still occurs

Behavior

The ghcr.io/ublue-os/bazzite-*:stable step runs for several minutes

Disk activity is visible

Installation then fails with:

ostree container image deploy exited with code 1

What I already tried

Automatic partitioning

Manual/custom partitioning

Using existing Windows EFI

Secure Boot disabled

Re-downloading and re-writing the ISO

Wi-Fi and USB tethering

The issue does not appear to be related to partitioning, EFI configuration, or Secure Boot.
The failure happens specifically during the ostree container image deployment phase.

i just had this issue as well and it was due to me attempting to reinstall without properly deleting the EFI entries for the previous installation.

I had just installed a dual boot of bazzite with windows but got stuck at a black screen. I was able to access the terminal but unable to login with my username and pw set during the install.

After trying to reinstall i got the exact error shown above.

I was able to fix it by booting into windows and using the diskpart tool to delete the EFI boot entry for fedora on my boot partition instructed in the following post

What did you use to flash the usb and what generation usb is it? Error 1 can be a lot of things, but not the efi when ussing the live iso afaik.

so, there's an EFI partition on the same disk. That's likely the issue. It's probalby trying to use that.

The easy solution is to just give it its own disk, let it auto-partition, and it'll just work.

I did a manual partition to share a drive with a disk I was using for windows, but that was a disk I used to store games so it did not have an EFI windows partition

Bazzite's installer, particularly it's partitioning tools, were the worst part of the experience for me. This is why the recommended method is just giving Bazzite an entire disk, and I can say this worked well without any user input using the automatic partitioning method.

reposting from the main channel from @biebel The efi stuff is fixed with the live installer. Best advice to give newcomers is to try again with fedora media writer and a usb 3 stick and automatic partitioning. This eliminates a lot of potential root causes and hunting down rabbit trails."

For example, I see bazzite-deck and bazzite-deck legacy for the steam gaming mode version. You should use the new installer (not legacy)

Best way forward now would be to clear the partition you want for bazzite, do a hash check on the iso and flash the iso with fedora media writer and try automatic install on that partition.

And it was because the disk label on the EFI partition was the wrong type and I had to manually change it so windows saw that it was a boot partition

yeah, so Disk 0 shows a 200 MB EFI partition, presumably for windows
