Steam can't run games in desktop mode

question
Just as the title says, when I'm in desktop mode steam can't run games.
I'll launch Palworld, it opens to a black screen but I can hear the music and can still navigate the menu with the controller, I just can't see anything.
If I open Mission Center with a keyboard shortcut, close my laptop lid and reopen it, then I can alt tab from Mission Center to Palworld and I can see the screen, but as soon as I get to a loading screen, the screen goes black again.

This happens with most of my games, but not all of them, my low power idle games run just fine in desktop mode.
Anyone have any ideas about this? Other launches like battle.net or Epic don't have this problem, it's unique to steam.

I'm on an Asus Z13 Flow 64gb version running the Asus ROG Ally distro.

Edit - I've tried changing the compatibility tool to Proton Hotfix, Proton Experimental and Proton 9.0-4, none of them worked.
Also now when I do launch a game in gaming mode, if I touch my keyboard or track pad at all, my controller will no longer work, It will be connected still, but have no input. I need to restart the game to fix it, restarting the controller has no effect.
