There's pretty standard "spherize" and possibly "cubeize" deformers in blender and other 3d packages. I'd use a blendshape to morph between the two. It's a pretty well established technique.
Blendshapes pretty much "just work" when imported into unity.
Then you could maybe animate the blendshape either directly in playmaker or by creating a 2 frame animation and playing it back in playmaker.
