My take on the IoT 2023 review by IoT Analytics

My take on the IoT 2023 review by IoT Analytics: 1) The IoT market has matured, and the hype cycle is over. That is actually a good thing. 2) Cloud providers' layoffs in the IoT domain prove that there is no one-size-fits-all IoT solution. That is also a good thing. Fired IoT professionals will design and build specialized offerings solving particular needs. Public cloud providers offer generic IoT capabilities, far from working out-of-the-box solutions. 3) IoT + AI = huge potential that still requires much work to provide tangible outcomes. From my perspective, IoT + AI is still in the hype phase. It will eventually mature, but we are not there yet....

Building IoT solutions using open-source - with Frédéric Desbiens.

Is it possible to build a commercial IoT solution using open-source components? What options should we consider? Can we self-host an IoT Platform, or should we use cloud infrastructure? Open-source as the vendor-locking solution. Those are only a few exciting topics we discussed with Frédéric Desbiens, the Embedded, IoT, and Edge Computing Program Manager at the Eclipse Foundation. Let me know what the most valuable takeaway for you from this episode was!...

NASA-JPL Open Source Rover: off-the-shelf edition

The JPL Open Source Rover is an open source, build it yourself, scaled down version of the 6 wheel rover design that JPL uses to explore the surface of Mars. The Open Source Rover is designed entirely out of consumer off the shelf parts. The robot has the following features: ➡️ Rocker-Bogie: The Rocker-Bogie suspension system allows all 6 wheels to continually be in contact with the ground while climbing over obstacles ➡️ Differential Pivot: Allows weight to be mechanically offloaded from one side of the rover to the other while climbing...

CMSIS v6 release by ARM ecosystem

CMSIS (Common Microcontroller Software Interface Standard) has evolved into a set of APIs, software components, tools, and workflows. CMSIS helps all embedded developers working with Arm Cortex-based devices to simplify software reuse, speed up project build and debug, and thus reduce the time to market for new applications.
Note that support for Arm Compiler v5 is removed.
CMSIS v6 supports the following toolchains out-of-the-box:...

Low Power AI Chip - Neuchip

Just heard about AMD's AI PC(https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/consumer/ryzen-ai.html) and this is looks yet exciting with power optimization and what they demo - an offline chatbot. That's definitely hefty to be put offline and seems promising. Who knows - one day machines will value so much more than human brain and no one would need to make money. https://spectrum.ieee.org/neuchips-low-power-ai...

How to get Embedded Systems Job?

If you are a fresh embedded systems graduate looking for a job or internship, here is a small piece of advice that no one else is sharing. If you are passionate about embedded systems, that needs to be visible in what you do while not on the job. https://pallavaggarwal.in/2022/09/10/how-to-get-embedded-systems-job/...

Advancements in Medical Imaging Technology

This is one area where the commercial technology is really pushed to it's edge. Can you imagine scanning through each nerves in the body through some rays or a remote camera which sees what's in your gut! I wonder before anything comes at scale in a smartphone or TV, the technology is already developed and exists in these niche products or somewhere around the corner in CERN. https://storydesign.electronicdesign.com/avnet-molex-medical-imaging...

pcb2blender - KiCad to Blender 3D model workflow

The pcb2blender tool revolutionizes the way KiCad projects are rendered in Blender. It streamlines the process of creating professional-looking product renders by allowing users to export their KiCad boards as .pcb3d files and then directly import them into Blender. This innovation eliminates the tedious cleanup work usually involved, enabling users to focus on scene composition and lighting. Notably faster than previous methods, pcb2blender supports rendering work-in-progress boards or those undergoing last-minute revisions. The GitHub page:...

3 trends for 2024: edge intelligence, RISC-V, & chiplets

This article discusses three major technology trends expected to shape 2024: ➡️ Edge Intelligence Enhancement: The article highlights advancements in deploying large language models (LLMs) on devices with limited memory, particularly focusing on a research paper by Apple. This paper introduces techniques for efficient LLMs operation on such devices, indicating a broader trend of increased machine learning and inference capabilities at the edge of networks. ➡️ RISC-V Architecture Adoption: The formation of Quintauris, a company backed by major tech players, is set to accelerate the commercialization of RISC-V hardware globally. This development suggests a growing interest in RISC-V architecture, especially in automotive, mobile, and IoT applications. The industry is moving towards heterogeneous computing architectures, where RISC-V plays a crucial role in various functions....

Custom Handheld Pi Zero HQ Camera

This project stands out in the realm of DIY camera technology. At its core, the camera integrates a Raspberry Pi Zero (with a preference for the Pi Zero 2) and the High-Quality (HQ) Camera module, coupled with a compact 1.5" Waveshare OLED display. Its unique features include live preview, zoom-crop panning for manual focus assistance, file viewing capabilities, and an integrated 10-axis IMU for potential horizon level overlay applications. This creation is less about competing with high-end cameras like the Sony Alpha series and more about providing a platform for custom software development and experimentation in camera design. The estimated cost of the camera, considering major components and a 35mm lens, stands around $185.00 The GitHub page: ...
