Amnesia Rebirth - Can't play more than 10 minutes. Display crashes, forcing a restart.
Greetings! I have installed Amnesia Rebirth through Heroic / Epic Games. I can play roughly 10 minutes of the beginning of the game, when it either freezes the display, forcing me to restart -- or it starts to flicker and artifact, then the entire display artifacts, locking up the system, forcing me to restart.
I have tried different versions of Proton - Proton 7.0, 6.3, GE-7-33, GE-7-28, and Wine-lutris-7.2-2. The game won't launch with the latter 2. The others launch the game, but all end up crashing in the end.
I have tried adding the
.exe as a non-Steam game, but that makes no difference. Same display crash.
All other games on my system play without issue. I am running Ubuntu 22.04 with RX 570 GPU.

The first picture shows the artifacting. The game is completley frozen at this point, but the ambient sounds are still playing. The only way to get out of the game is to go to the tty.
The second picture shows the tty. After about 2 seconds, the console is flooded with amd gpu messages. The only way to get out is restart the computer.

Sounds like a driver issue

It's probably not related to heroic, but it is my first time using the launcher, so maybe I did something wrong with the install. I read there was a native version of the game included with Epic, but I can't find out how to install that.
My drivers should be quite up to date as they are included with the kernel. As I said above, this is the only game that is causing issues.

You should try Wine-GE-Proton7-43. All of the versions you referenced are not advisable

I will give that a shot in a bit. I think the only reason I have those other versions was when I was trying to get Starcraft Remastered working with Lutris.

Oh yeah wine-ge is always reccomended
You can also send a heroic log maybe
(After changing to wine-ge if it doesn't work)

What kernel version is this?

Oh it is 5.19
Yeah 5.19 is known for hangs
You have 2 options
1. Upgrade kernel using some method (to 6.2 preferably)
2. Use a different distro
3. Beg Ubuntu to stop making bad decisions by using random non-LTS kernels that have known issues in an LTS flavor
I don't think it's an issue considering you are having no issues with anything else, but it's good to remove variables

Oops, I forgot to post my log. I just checked it and there are no errors, so it's probably nothing to do with heroic like you said.
Kernel is 5.19. First I will try the latest wine-ge, then changing the kernel.

Tried Wine-GE-Proton7-43. The game crashed twice in a row at the same spot. It's on the loading screen after pressing "Continue". I press any button, it goes black, display goes off, then back on with artifacts.

Before I mess with the kernel, is there a way to download the native version through Epic? I did find this post last night: https://old.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/uja9jk/amnesia_rebirth_on_epic_store/ and followed the instructions, but had the same crashes within a few minutes.

Would the setting "auto install/update DVXK on prefix" make a difference? I did try that before, but saw no difference.

Make sure you have that and the vk3d3 option on.

I'll give both options a shot. I only had the first on before. Do I have to restart the client for them to activate? Because nothing seems to happen checking them.

There’s an offline mode argument in there. Try disabling offline mode

No luck. It was already unchecked, but I tried enabling it too. I can't even play 2 minutes of the game anymore. After pressing any key to continue, the monitor goes off, comes back, and it artifacts, forcing me to restart.
I'm just going to uninstall the game for now. I'll try again in a few months. Appreciate the help guys.
