Trying to find jobs that I qualify for that are part time and not (politics, government, or sales)

I am looking for jobs that are not political, governmental, or sales positions? It has to be part time as I am in university. Below is a list of my skills that I have acquired with my experience. I do not know what other jobs I qualify for.

Your resume is too long

put your experience first, then your education, and consolidate skills and abilities. you want it all to fit on one page

Agreed. You don’t need to repeat things if you do them at multiple jobs. Try to push it down to 1 page and also focus on tailoring it to job postings/listings Lots of dead space at the top as well. Design-wise you’re not utilizing space super efficiently.

yeah I'd recommend looking into some templates on microsoft word, there's some pretty good ones that would help streamline this a lot what's the job situation like at your university? when I was in college I worked a bunch of various jobs around campus; they're always super amenable to the student schedule

Thank y’all, but that wasn’t my question as this is a rough draft. I wanted to find what jobs I would qualify for

I’m not sure this is the place to ask that question.

I asked in #mfa-general if it was ok to ask here I can close it if y’all think it isn’t appropriate

It’s not that it isn’t okay it’s that I’m not sure a fashion forum full of strangers is the place to have a skill assessment. But maybe someone can chime in with some advice.

Do you have any idea where else I could go to get opinions on this?

Your school may have a counselor for this type of thing

I think it is (unfortunately) going to depend heavily on where you are If you're in a college town, take a look at what the job board at the school looks like. I always recommend looking at the IT department because a lot of the time you don't need to be terribly technical (especially if it's a student-facing position) and it generally pays better than other part-time student gigs I also worked at my school's gym which was always looking for bodies. Was able to pretty easily set my schedule and when I didn't like it I just left

If you're in school for bio I would seek out something related to that to get more experience in the field

It's summer so places at the school may be either 1) feverishly looking for bodies to fill space or 2) waiting until the school starts up

Asking teachers in your department for research or lab positions could be a fairly easy in

lab assistant stuff/doing research for a professor would probably be good, yeah? words out of my mouth
Sal
Sal11mo ago
Might not pay amazingly but the experience is definitely worth it

Also if you know how many research hours you can get for a professor in a specific time period it's generally pretty easy to just submit timesheets for the full time (but never over) and the professors rarely care as long as the work's getting done I did that for one of my criminal procedure profs in law school

I've interviewed people for undergrad research positions in my bioengineering lab, which isn't far off of bio labs

setfiretoflames11mo ago
They're generally just really happy for the help

Depending on the lab's funding they may or may not be able to pay you, be sure to ask up front about that But yes you'll want to reach out directly to professors if that's what you're after

University doesn’t have many jobs available, not good at technology at all, and the jobs that are at my university go to younger people 18-22. I’m 27. Sure they can’t openly discriminate, but I have applied and not gotten them Not many jobs available at my university Very selective, I applied and didn’t get them

Are there any profs you're on good terms with? I'd directly email them and ask if they or any other profs they know are looking for bodies

Ah I'm sorry to hear that

Sal
Sal11mo ago
Yeah can you start with an unpaid research position to build up a relationship with a prof then try and stay on for a funded position

Always worth checking in at coffee shops/small local retail stores around it if they need anyone Not sure if they'll work with your schedule but always an option If you're 27 you could barback or bartend

Clinical research assistants are always needed as well if you want to get into that side of things

You should check if your university has a "work study" system in place, the university sets aside money for people getting campus jobs (whether at a research lab or dining hall) and it makes you easier to employ because less of your paycheck comes out of the lab's grant funds
Sal
Sal11mo ago
You have a lot of communication skills that could help you in a clinical research assistant role and every large university is doing a shit ton of research
SammyRay
SammyRay11mo ago
I’m, but again I applied for those. They go to younger students and are limited and competitive

Also I understand you want to use your skills but if you need a "bridge" position for cash now, everything wuz mentioned is solid

I remember right before my sophomore year my workstudy got cut and my job I liked that I was going back to had to show me the door. I ended up working in the gym until I got a job with the IT department that I ended up staying at. But it certainly kept me paid for the time when otherwise I would have been flat broke

A part time job that uses my experience. Not a governmental, political, sales, retail, or restaurant service job

Jobs are pretty abundant in healthcare, which you could use your communication experience and bio degree towards. In my field (pharmacy) technicians make good money and are always needed In addition, any hospital or health center is likely hiring for entry level admin positions Your schools student health center could even be a good place to start

Yes, I have applied to those

For what it's worth, I employ people with a work background that looks a bit like yours every year, but your resume needs some work. I want to know your actual skills, things you've done a lot of that you are really good at (proficient in phone communication is probably one I'd keep). There are things that recur in your 'experience' section you can pick up here. I don't care about your 'abilities', because it's an extension of skills - make these one section and cut out some of the fluff you currently have. Your experience section is pretty good but you can shorten it, cut out repetition, less detail in older roles with less responsibility, more in newer roles or where a responsibility is added. You probably don't need to list so much, and I would seperate out volunteer Vs paid roles. BUT I'm assuming you are early career, and looking to work in a different field after your study is over. Consider the trade off between using your experience to maybe (but probably not) get a little more money in the short term, it sounds like you need some cash. That's cool. Alternatively using your time now to still earn money but set you up with the kinds of experience you'll need in a career in bio sciences later down the line. Apply for everything you can find, this is a muscle you need to train

Sorry if I didn’t mention this, but this was a rough draft. I have finalized copy, but that has personal information including my real name, address, university, location, etc
