- yes. But if you have a filter like a

clause, then you have to scan more rows to match the filter, since your table isn't necessarily ordered.

in that query. But it has to scan the table somehow - usually a binary search. It's going to keep searching (scanning) until it has matched all possible records, or hit the

Yeah there needs to be some order but I think we are both thinking the same thing. I originally read that as like it will read the entire table even if you already found a number of records matching the limit but it will find only the first rows up to limit but it can possibly scan the entire table if there are not enough to fill up the limit

That’s correct.

When the EXPLAIN keyword appears by itself it causes the statement to behave as a query that returns the sequence of virtual machine instructions it would have used to execute the command had the EXPLAIN keyword not been present. When the EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN phrase appears, the statement returns high-level information regarding the query plan that would have been used.
