Thanks, please just let me know if I can provide any more info or feedback! The biggest breakage potential here is any kind of postinstallpostinstall, etc. scripts, outside of just unnecessary re-downloads. Skipping the

npm install

npm install

(etc.) step is gonna break any workflow like that that relies on something running, and it's not uncommon for

npm

npm

packages to do that kind of thing.

Yeahhhh node_modulesnode_modules bloat is fun. So many libraries end up publishing both build and source files, tests, docs, etc. inflating file size, and optimising output just isn't a priority

I've got a change up on deck to fix the previous weirdness (in v2 only). If you set a root_dir previously, you couldn't use a package-lock.json (or similar) at the root of your repo because it would just be gone

I am not actively working on a project using any of the supported package managers. We're mainly using Deno. Like cyb3rjak3, let me know if/when you enable either Deno support or something customizable.

This makes a lot of sense to me and will mean way more use-cases can be supported too, like my weird cd site && npm cicd site && npm ci stuff.

Downloading dependencies without the cache takes approximately 20 seconds, for a 100k LOC project with 600 files.

So, looking at timings:

Downloading the cache takes 10 seconds. It'd be 15s to install them (ok, I don't have many, but still).
Node installation is another 15s.
Deployment of 6 files is another 12.
The actual build is 6s.

Oh, yeah, definitely! I guess the annoying part is that it’s wildly inconsistent (I got 1.5s in a subsequent build for the cache download) and the time to download node each time from node’s website.

Caching it in the caching of the dependencies, since it exists now. Either proxy the node files with some caching (or even R2), or put it in the deps cache.

I'm not really seeing that much of a difference in build times with caching personally. It's taking the same amount of time to restore the dependencies from the cache as it was to download the depedencies with pnpm.
