Fashion Philosophies: How do you get dressed? - Topic of the day 11/30/23
When choosing an outfit, do you start with a certain item? Do you have a formula you follow? Are you vibes based? Did you write a program to recreate Cher Horowitz’s closet? What is your approach?

The Clueless Closet
The show is back
i usually start with 1 thing i know i want to wear and build around it
Check the weather. Pick shoes I went to wear, then base my outfit on the shoes.
Check weather. Usually top or coat first, then pick shoes. I normally wear black pants/jeans so am braindead on that front.
I just wake up feeling like something
Yeah exactly this
Sometimes it’s not working and I find something that is while messing with it so I pivot
Some dope pants usually
or a cool jacket
same. And if I'm at home, I pick which raw item needs the most fading, and base around that. Honestly since WFH (a couple of years prior to the 'vid) I decided to start dressing up every morning, so I wasn't a complete slob.
After reaching for the 1 piece I really want to wear I tend to build a fit around the color story I'm vibing with after that, and then the make it or break it part is silhouette, and then final touch is shoes and/or a hat depending on vibes + how good my hair looks. The weather is taken into consideration throughout, as well as what formality level works best for what I'm doing that day.
ALL VIBES BABY
i usually latch onto like one item i really want to wear so i'll just play around that
Lately, since I've been buying so much clothing (relative to pre-MFA James), I prioritize stuff I haven't worn yet.
It’s either do I want to try or not and lately I don’t want to try so I just pick up whatever is on the chair
That too. On days I'm WFH, like today, I just throw on jeans or chinos and a tee.
I love the term "color story," that really connects with me for some reason.
This time of year I check the weather and choose outerwear then build backwards from there
If i'm not dressing interesting, then most of my stuff is interchangeable so I just try to coordinate colors since the sil is gonna be the same. If trying to dress interesting I'll either use a tried and true fit combo or roll the dice on a handful of black pieces until I get the vibe right.
oh yeah...that too. all my jackets right now are Patagonia / Gorpcore. I would like to get some "dressier" jackets. But if the weather is 20F, I'm wearing my winter parka, no matter what.
Bottom up is the way to go only have a couple of jackets so it’s best to start with shoes and then build off whatever vibe those shoes give off
I plan my outfit the night before. Typically I start with the shoes and go up from there. Then I’ll change my mind day of about the shoes a few times which results in a few different outfit changes. 50/50 chance I end up wearing what I had initially planned to wear.
How come I own like 20 pairs of shoes but feel like I don’t own a single good pair
Capitalism
Probably true
sell them all and buy 5 good pairs
Also good advice^^
Post shoes and we can vote them off bracket style
Charli Shoe Battle
I already know which ones I wanna get rid of lol
All my shoes are decent to good except one pair
Two, if you consider my business casual derbies
But I’m not getting rid of those
“Business Casual Derby” sounds like a shoe you should get rid of 😬
No they’re comfortable and work fine without drawing attention to me at business casual places
I currently own like 20 garments so I've basically exhausted every combination thereof. I just pick one.
I'm kinda weird in that I always start pants first, then shoes, then the rest. I'm most drawn to pants for whatever reason, they're pretty neat
Notwithstanding like socks and underwear obviously
Maybe closer to 30 now
Pants are the best of the best
I am usually a vibes guy
I have a fall inspo album ive been pulling from a lot
When im specifically thinking about a fit to take a picture of though ill pick the piece ive been thinking about and put stuff together in the mirror and take a little extra time
If im stuck ill look through some styling from dries or whatever brand im in to that day and try and pull some cues off of that
Anyone else plan their outfit and then choose something completely different later 😅
I plan the outfit the night before in my head. next morning try it on and doesnt work so panic and try different combos until it does. been a few minute late to work bc of it so have to go back to trying it on the night before and steaming the outfit too since ive also been going out wrinkly
Without any thought at all I've always done pants first, and I gotta say it does not work very well
Speaking to that Articles of Interest reference, I was using Stylebook for like a year and then switched back to Acloset. Last two days I've used their outfit planner and it's worked well.
I'm obsessed with making my perfect, small, sustainable lil' closet
