Possible to shrink merino aran?

Hey everyone, I bought a beautiful Inis Meain cable knit aran sweater. It's by far my favorite piece of clothing and I love wearing it and caring for it. I got it in XL, it was way to large, I replaced it with an L and it fit me well. In the last year I've replaced gymming for boxing and lost some weight, now that sweater is too large for me, when I'm sitting down it's fine, but when I'm standing up it rolls way past the waist and it almost looks like a dress... My question is it possible to shrink 100% merino wool? Will I ruin it by trying something like this? My other hail Mary is asking if anyone wishes to swap an M sized for an L sized one?

Shrinking is wildly unpredictable and you're as likely to felt it as shrink it. You're probably best selling it and getting a new one.

Hot/warm wash and hot dryer, but I would not recommend since it could shrink way more than intended. Hard to know how much it will.

Please don‘t, as some of the other have already said! Just today I received a Shetland sweater that I got on Ebay, which clearly had not been properly taken care of and had shrunken from XL to a size M. I‘ll have to return it as it’s basically unwearable as it has shrunken so unpredictably; the collar has essentially remained the same as before but the rest of the sweater just looks incredibly off in its proportions!
