This may be a dumb question but I can't find the answer after searching a bit: Is the Rhino intended to be kept plugged in to AC power all the time, even when not in use? Is it "always on" when plugged into AC power and connected to the computer? And if so, how much power does it draw while at rest?

Thanks. I keep a dust cover over it when I'm not flying, so I was concerned about heat buildup over the course of a day working at my computer (i.e., the stick would not be in low power mode because the PC would be running). Probably a non-issue with no load on the motors, but it's easy enough for me to put a remote-controlled switch between the plug and the outlet.

I just got a call that my Rhino is waiting at home for me to get back from a work trip. Any advice for desk mounting? I currently have this cheap desk mount from Hikig but I believe it is too small for the rhino and wont come low enough, also need some advice regarding an extension as my seat has no cutout etc. really hoping to get to use the Rhino before I build my rig!

Between the torque and weight, you're going to have a tough time with those mounts. I side-mounted. Much easier.

since the rhino is using motors i would assume it does do it but for planes that move the stick for trimming instead of trimming the control surfaces is that possible with the rhino?

for the real plane (JAS 39C Gripen) steers with force, and with ffb with values

The roll force increases 0.5Nm/° up to 7.8° left and right.

The pitch force increase 0.52Nm/° up to positive 11° and negative-7°.

Soft stop in pitch 11° and to hard stop increasing 0.8Nm/° to 15°.

Hi, there's no need for strain gauges. The motors give roughly linear torque relationship with electrical current. All that's required is to calibrate the given spring profile.

As a regular joystick, it will work fine. But, XP does not support native FFB and the TelemFFB companion software does not yet support XP.

Some folks may be using the (now defunct) XPForce software but I’m not sure it works with XP12.

Hope one day VPForce can support X-Plane..it's where the FFB is needed the most..plenty of top notch GA, and Boeings/Hydraulic controlled airliner with artificial aerodynamic load feel systems, without FFB, they lose half of the soul

Maybe an in-game plug-in is needed to be wrote for FFB to work? I saw other company did it that way..
Or maybe shoot an email directly to Laminar Research talking about the issue? The team is relatively small but seems to be very passionate about making the simulator true to life..maybe they just don't know that FFB is arising and they could do better helping the FFB devs

yzhanping (the maker of the DIY F16) has confirmed on HOTAS/HOSAS/SIMPIT's discord the possibility to order custom grips with the amount of inputs (and also custom shape if we provide 3D data) we want!
He also added that the motherboard of the stick is based on the CD4021 series, which can have up to 118 button/trigger/encoder inputs!

@walmis can you confirm if the Rhino supports the CD4021 series of shift registers, please?
Also what would you think would be the best way to go if we were to order a stick made just for the Rhino in terms of connectors/hardware/software? (I don't know maybe it's not all relevant but I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on what we should do if we can start from scratch.)

As others have replied, I'm also hoping that xPlane (11 or 12) will soon be able to drive the Rhino stick, via the Rhino interface software. It's bl**dy amazing with MsFS, so would be even better with XP's handling.

I have a Brunner FF Yoke as well, and that works perfectly with MsFS and xPlane (11 and 12), with it's own intermediate software, so it can be done.

I also have the xpForce software which I've used for many years with a Sidewinder FF stick, but now just jerks it back and forth, and I haven't managed to get a peep out of my Rhino with it either. I tried emailing the developer, but unfortunately have never had any replies. It was quite cheap to register, but still a disappointment now to not get any responses.

@_gunzablazin just a thought, but since the rhino is such a good basic joystick, I wonder if adding a software control for moving the joystick centre would be an easy win over full XP integration?
