Brand Spotlight: Rick Owens - Topic of the day 3/9/24
It's time. One of the most well-known designers in internet fashion communities, Rick Owens is well known for his avant-garde dark designs, big sneakers, and unique silhouettes. Do you known any Rick? Is it a trap for people who think that dressing designer = dressing better? What are some of the best fits you've seen that feature Rick Owens clothing?

Are those fashion orthopedic braces I spy? 🧐
I think Rick is sick, but as with any very popular brand I've seen some examples of people getting lost in the sauce
Who?
I was pretty out on Rick for the last few years, just wasn’t my thing, but the newest season is amazing, beautiful textures and colors
Feel like secondhand pricing gatekept me from Rick for a while, since I feel like real steals are rarer.
Now that I’m willing to spend more on individual pieces I would consider picking up something from the new collection when it hits sale.
i like a lot of rick stuff. i do feel like people get a little fanatical / cult-ish about his work sometimes, which is a bit off-putting. also, a bit hard to wear for me (the things ive tried on)
very sculptural work, for lack of a better term
To give a real answer i do really like rick. I think he is pretty exceptional at color and silhouette, but its in a way i mostly appreciate from a distance. I never felt super at home in the rick clothes i wore, and i feel like the “look” can kinda bring out my antisocial tendencies if that makes any sense lol
Another thing i really really love about him is how experimental he is with the shoulders of his jackets and coats
100% agree with this (esp the latter part about not feeling at home / antisocial) haha
i think a decent chunk of rick is really meant to be styled as intended or at least with other rick stuff; not to say that it can't be mixed with other brands but imo head to toe rick hits different. i suspect that might inform the "cult" feeling but maybe that's the 'status and culture' talking
imo he is an incredibly talented and thoughtful designer that i just ride on a completely separate wavelength from. i don't know if there's meant to be a "rick person" but i think you can tell when someone is really unsuited to or trying to force it - not in a physical sense but the overall aesthetic
yeah, i agree with what you said about "full" rick. i feel like there's this cohort of his audience - not everyone, but a large portion - who wear head-to-toe rick all the time and idk it just feels a bit lazy to me. i know that sounds really critical, and in a way, its a compliment to him as a designer. because everything really -does- just go so well together. but i feel like the wearer doesnt really have to "do" anything
basically, i think rick is a lot of people's first foray into the world of expensive/high fashion. and i think as a result, a lot of people latch onto him and get sucked into his world a little too much. if that makes sense.
I feel that alot of awesome rick fits have "don't talk to me vibes", is that what you mean?
I think it can be a bit unapproachable for like the average person sometimes, and im very introverted, so the combo in my mind kinda feels like it might lead me to not talking to other people
I actually think that making full Rick look actually good is deceptively hard
Most people just look like they didnt think like you said
Countless Rick bricks out there
I generally agree with bishop. I also think there other brands rick works well with. I think it's often Rick heads only wearing Rick who give this impression that you have to wear head to toe Rick.
Anyway Rick is hella talented, the brand has gone through quite a few different phases, and is an awesome look when pulled off.
yeah i dont think anyone was saying you cant style his clothes with other brands. just that it is a certain vibe when you wear full rick
I agree, but I think some of it is just confirmation bias cause of how many influencers personalities are just Rick.
he is talented for sure. im just saying that i think people get a little obsessive about his work
with certain pieces, yeah i agree. but i do feel like you can layer 1-2 of his long shirts + tank tops, prisoners / cargos, and geobaskets, and its going to look pretty good in most cases
curious what aspects you've noticed though
He has a lot of really dramatic proportions, some of which are directly in opposition to each other so you can easily end up looking really wonky
You’re right about some of the sort of “core Rick” outfits though
yeah that is true, 100%
He makes some nice stuff
Incredible designer with some of the most insufferable fanboys going.
