That being said, there are many many clothes out there that you could wear that don’t make you feel culturally insensitive so I’d just recommend wearing those instead lol
That’s true and I don’t think I would get more but I was thinking this would be absolutely perfect for summer. Definitely thinking about removing it from my collection though after some post-purchase consideration.
I also think this looks fine, and doesn’t even really read as a noragi because it doesn’t have a tie closure or a uniquely Japanese pattern. I’ve never quite gotten the hate about white guys wearing noragis, though. Everyone steals from everyone. There would never have been a market for American denim in Japan if that wasn’t true.
Out of touch with who? I’m not offended when Japanese people dress like 19th century American cowboys and prospectors. And to my knowledge, most Japanese people are not actually offended by the very small handful of white American guys wearing noragis
my problem with white guy noragi has v little to do with cultural appreciation vs appropriation, it's that 90% of the time it's the most mid fit in the world with a noragi on top because thing, japan
Japanese companies reproducing vintage Americana is not the same as a white guy wearing a traditional Japanese garment in a country with a history of anti asian racism.
also the second part of your statement is out of touch because historically "everyone steals from everyone" is not true and fully ignores systemic violence
The kyotos are kinda a grey area. You could try searching for wrap front cardigans. I'm gonna second carrion's advice here - if you don't know how to style it don't get it, and that goes for everything.
I think the kyoto is close enough to a noragi that if you’re the kind of person who sanctimoniously declares that wearing a noragi “ignores systemic violence” even though the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, you probably shouldn’t buy one
I think if you need to justify wearing a garment by saying ‘the japanese bombed pearl harbor’ that should tell you a lot about whether you should be wearing it or not lmfao
I wouldn’t even wear one! I agree they usually look goofy. I just take exception to the idea that I cant wear one and see a lot of hypocrisy in the “appropriation” argument
lmao you fucking Americans and culture, I say celebrate your own culture and celebrate others culture, its not rocket science. I dont shit myself if I see an Asian wearing a historically inaccurate Viking helmet with horns
It was originally going to be a Rape of Nanjing reference but I thought that would be a bit much. Anyways, most of the world has “appropriated” Western clothing, if a few white software engineers want to wear noragis it shouldn’t trigger people
