it will lock you to that image date until you rebase off it. but it lets you find out if there is a regression in some driver or whatnot

That's true, but Brew's repo is pretty limited, and distrobox-export is often wonky. For instance, I can export Zed with no issue from the AUR, but Reaper never shows up.

also that's two tools for package management that one can do (in my experience at least)
