And again, wouldn't syncthing and rclone involve replicating what I'm trying to manage on my local machine? the media server has way more storage than my local machine, that wouldn't make any sense

my two use cases are uploading from local machine to the (windows) server and moving or renaming files on the server

Interestingly it works a few times. I installed a few flatpaks then I get into this state. I'm going to start over again and run it for a while installing nothing. I thought the flatpaks would be in user space (and isolated), but maybe one is splashing to core functionality

So I skipped to step 3 assuming those utils are preinstalled, and they seem to be; authenticated, but got this error after it listed the shares

easiest way is to leave your current windows install alone
