You check to see if it's in /boot or /usr/lib/modules/nameofkernel

ah it was in /usr/lib/modules/mykernel . apparently this wasn't the actual problem. it suggested that CONFIG_JOYSTICK_XPAD_LEDS=yCONFIG_JOYSTICK_XPAD_LEDS=y was necessary to solve my problem, but that's not it :(

I layer the RPM in my custom image. Typically you only want to layer packages if you can't solve it by installing either the flatpak, distrobox, or brew.
