I don’t know actually what will happen then but I think it should have internal protection so that both port can be isolated from each other

Thanks for all the help guys - I seem to be getting somewhere now (hopefully). I have a usbc cable on power block into display port 2 (for now I just have the usb connection disconnected for testing). when I plug in the HDMI to the monitor the pisture appears for between 5-10 second and then the signal seems to drop? (it remains powered as it flashed red/green/blue cycles). which if I then unplug and replug the hdmi back in the screen appears again.

Now the monitor is mini HDMI so I currently have it connected through a mini HMDI to full HDMI adapter, then micro HDMI to full HDMI?

Verify Detection Check with

vcgencmd get_camera

Try following steps:
1. Install bullseye os on your raspberry pi
2. After booting raspberry pi enter below commands

sudo raspi-config-> interface-> enable libcamera-> save->reboot

sudo raspi-config-> interface-> enable libcamera-> save->reboot

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

(enter this command, scroll down till last [all]) under [all] enter the command "dtoverlay=imx708"
Now, save and reboot raspberry pi
Enter libcamera command-

sudo libcamera -hello t 0

sudo libcamera -hello t 0

And check if the camera is detecting or not

In new Raspberry Pi OS you may not get camera. As it is enabled by default.

So I suggested to go got Bullseye release of Raspberry Pi OS and then try Camera. last time i tried with new RPi OS , there were lot of issues. This may save your time.

It's been 6+ months for me and not sure if the camera-related issues been fixed in new updates of rpi os but if you find it difficult to resolve then move to A stable legacy version of Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye.

trying to an IMX219 camera to work with a rpi 0 2w, reading the forums I think its a combo of the new OS and the camera not working. Solutions exist for the Bullseye version of the OS but not for the newer ones.

I don't really want to downgrade and reflash but that may be the only option I have at the moment but lets us see after the current update, I don't know why it is loading at 20KB/s
