Cannot boot steam games, internal/external drives

Hello, thanks for reading, your patience, and apologies in advance. tl:dr - I am unable to boot any steam games, I am so lost that I don't know what to ask. Please forgive my outrageous ignorance... Its been about three evenings of me cracking at this but this is how I recall things going since I have started trying.... Installed bazzite 42 on partitioned internal ssd. Running the Steam client shipped with Bazzite. Initially added external ssd with prexisting steam library to steam without issue. I receive disk write errors when launching game (Borderlands 3 and Helldivers 2 [both gold on protondb]). Uninstall and reinstall games on external. Sometimes receive disk write error, other times hit play button and get nothing. Tried different versions of proton. (Hotfix, 9, 8 and experimental) Disk write errors continue when launching games and/or downloading proton versions. See some threads about read/write permissions on my external ssd. Unsure how to confirm noexec or mount without noexec.
Reformatted my external ssd from ntfs to ext4. Now cannot add disk to steam. Tried booting a game after installing it on the internal ssd. Game is 'launching' forever. So. It is clear that I am not very good at this and I approach you all with my hat in my hand, asking for assistance.

Don't use ntfs partitions for linux gaming. The internal disk should work if it's not an ntfs one and ext4 external ssd should work if mounted correctly. proton experimental is good as the standard one to use. Let's start with getting a game to run on the bazzite drive so you can relax and unwind πŸ˜„

I am very much into that premise. I currently have helldivers on the bazzite drive. Thank you for the quick respond, also

Try setting it on proton experimental and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options so we get some logs should it fail

Just fyi, most games that are gold+ on protondb are just a matter of installing and playing with experimental. bazzite has a good guide for gaming as well: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Gaming/

I will! May I engage you at a later time for some assistance getting this to work utilizing my external drive??

Yeah, sure. If you mind tinkering a bit, make sure you don't have the drive mounted using your fstab file (/etc/fstab) and that it has a label. If those conditions are met, bazzite should mount your drive automatically with the right flags so it can be added to steam.

And the ideal format should be ext4?

for ssds btrfs is better

Don't suggest this please, the dev doesn't and never will support ntfs as game drive

Good evening. Thanks again for the help! I am now struggling to get my external drive recognized by Steam. The disk is formatted btrfs and I have it mounted /var/mnt/ssd... every time I try to add it to Storage in Steam, nothing happens. Also, when the disk is mounted, I can't seem to write to the disk. I tried dropping a text file into the drive and it wouldn't take. Hm...

See if you can take ownership in disks
