Genshin Impact doesn't boot up past the launcher

Dunno what went wrong. It just started failing a few days ago.

Will mark this as solved, but I will do prevention steps and switch to proton 10 rn since I am running genshin on GE Proton

Hello, I'm very new to Linux gaming so I don't really understand what the good setup is.
I'm on Fedora 42 Workstation and I installed the Flatpak from the app store.
There's an issue in Hoyo's side which only launches the game if I unplug my internet after I press 'Launch' in the launcher, I got that solution from YouTube.
However, I've redone the install multiple times today because somehow, the initial install only worked if I did install + play in a row. If I fully shut down my machine or restart more than once, Heroic acts either as if I had no file at all with no prefix (while it exists in the file explorer) or in Genshin launcher, as if I didn't download the game, while it is on my main drive and takes the space it's supposed to take (90+ GB). When I browse to add it by hand, it doesn't work.
I've tried with the most recent Wine and Proton versions, is this the problem ?
What is the optimal setup to get that not only to run once, but also that I don't have to reinstall everything everytime I shut down my laptop?
Thanks for your help. It feels very frustrating because I got it to work few times but it broke everytime, meanwhile i could set the good resolution and my controller inside the game, so it's not like it isn't working at all... I did a new install everytime and erased the ones that broke because I don't have infinite space on my drive.
I'd really appreciate to get Genshin working on my laptop, the few minutes I gamed it it was very smooth

sounds like your prefix isn't getting saved, and it asks you to locate the game because it either doesn't save the prefix you chose or constantly swaps between one or the other

it's a really common issue and it's very easy to fix once you get it going, my only worry is that the game isn't getting automatically aligned to your prefix. Maybe you are making a new one everytime and then, when you open up the game, it selects a default one? You can contact me via DM, I will try and help you out.

For starters, it could help if you don't use "use default wine configuration" when installing the game, as the drive issue gets fixed by making a new prefix, and it's probably swapping back to the default one when you open it up again

Anytime I uninstall I also erased fully what was created before so that hopefully there are no confusion between files entitled the same way.
What is the configuration I should try then?
I'd redo it from clean slate state again anyway so it's better I'm aware of what to do. It's the first time ever I set up a game on Wine/Proton/Heroic so I'm clueless on the prefixes and dependencies and such. Can you indicate me how to do step by step to avoid the default not working ?

first, I'd recommend you make a new prefix, as in, disable the default wine prefix, and assign the prefix path to one you know

yes, whenever you want the prefix to be, this is the prefix for what genshin runs with, not the folder for genshin itself

as you make it and run the game, the necessary files will be made for whatever version of wine or proton you chose to run with the game

inside the folder, it should look like this, this is once you make the prefix and boot up the game once

then, once you have the directory done, copy the location and use it with this command

you can remove every other drive, it doesn't really matter, that you need is one that reflects your proper storage location

I've been silly and using ge proton and it stopped working again, so I am personally just figuring out how to install stock proton on HGL and then I will do that again

when you change wine versions you'll need to tweak the prefix, but having a custom folder for it and knowing how to use winecfg is a lifesaver that will make gaming within Linux much, much easier

with fedora you should be able to use the terminal and use "pwd" to navegate through your folders, but afaik fedora's version of a file explorer should easily let you grab the location of the folder you want to use

I got confused with the first question, just create a folder, set it up inside HGL, let the game run once (for the folders to automatically make themselves) and then log out to tweak the prefix using winecfg

I tried with proton GE but I was told it would break after a bit. Try stock proton. I am trying to get to know how to install it as I use steam but can't put the proton version I use on there within HGL... Maybe I could try and add the game to steam, idk

Proton is a custom wine version made by valve, while GE Proton is a further developed variant made by the community

they are fairly similar but not completely the same, and depending on the game you may choose to run one or the other
