Dishonored crash when someone is killed

Whenever I kill any of the first enemies, the game crashes. I somehow got around that by turning on cloud sync but then it crashed again after they killed the empress. The screenshot is from when I kill an enemy but the error is similar when the empress is killed. After downloading the game for the first time it worked just fine and I was able to get quite far into it. However I think it was after adding it to steam that it began to crash like this. I've removed it from steam since but the crashing persists.
