well this only happens in linux... even reinstalling doesnt fix this

Hooha! Hey 144hz is a good standby until you can get a displayport. My guess is KDE allows it to go higher despite the cable because some distros do come with some extra HDMI stuff. One way or the other.

Just toss in some more info. Might help a fellow user figure it out if they drop by. (I can't help right now unfortunately).

So I suppose some questions to ask is if you're using HDMI or Displayport, is it booting like this or is it after you do an action (like coming out of sleep mode or after a game or during a game), monitor refresh rate and rez. Pretty much anything off the top of your head of what hardware you have and what was going on at the time.

(Displayport vs hdmi can be important because HDMI has all this licensing so it runs at a lower standard)

im using hdmi (i dont have a proper displayport cable yet) this happens after its booted and my specs are: intel core® i5-4590( i believe ) 16gigs of ddr3 1666 and ofc an rx550.

Hmn...What resolution is the monitor and what's the refresh rate? And do you have another smaller monitor you can test? (edited to avoid speculation)

Licensing restrictions on HDMI may be at play then with the refresh rate. I know earlier standards only support 120. So it may be freaking out trying to force 165...can you interact with it at all and see well enough to reduce the refresh rate?

Because if it works at 120 it's probably because HDMI is licensed to hell so bazzite could get in legal trouble with certain versions. While microsoft just pays the high fees.

Good good someone threw something we can use if we can get terminal in a corner or something if we need to try the resolution. I'm not on KDE so I'm gonna look up the commands while you try that cable.

We can do that without the menu by using Krunner which opens up top and hopefully the terminal opens easily enough unless right clicking the desktop works. Stuck at my work computer so a bit limited in what I can test on my side.

That'd be Alt+F2 and it appears up top and will let you open apps or run simple commands.

And to change the refresh rate we'll need

kscreen-doctor --outputskscreen-doctor --outputs
To get the outputs available.

And...wow this man example page is fairly sparse. Gonna try to find the command but my googlefoo must be horrible.

Bazzite isn't like massive yet so paying the HDMI Forum for all the latest features isn't a thing, but KDE must've set it to those high levels on you anyways. So the cable freaked because it was transmitting a bad signal. But yeah you can try that. I think up to 120 should be fine with all the old standards.

You should've seen the early days of linux. Before the Mp3 patents expired it was too expensive for MP3 to be shipped legally. There were all the great dubious ways to get it, but it was still one of many problems. These days not many companies lock their standards like that because they can win more customers by making it easy to adopt. But HDMI has a death grip on TVs. So no reason for them to change it.
