Launching Cyberpunk 2077 completely locks up the system (nvidia-open)

I am posting this here since according to protondb, this game should actually run out of the box without tinkering and on multiple versions.

I run bazzite (nvidia "open"), and when launching Cyberpunk 2077 via steam, I can see the first few moments of the opening logo animation, after which my entire system visually freezes up.
Sometimes I am lucky and can switch to a different tty and kill the process, making the system do things again, but most times even the shortcuts to switch ttys cease functioning.
In that case I have to hard kill my machine (reset/hold power button).

Only once did I get it running past that point, which worked well enough afterwards.

I have tried different versions of proton, some env variables (primarily PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND), verifying file integrity, all to no effect.
Running with PROTON_LOG reveals no notable issues I can detect, if helpful I can try to produce a log and attach it.
Any hints on what this could be, because it seems it does not really relate to proton itself...
