Game crash leading to btrfs corruption

Since around midday yesterday, I keep experiencing game crashes (oldschool runescape, runelite using bolt launcher if it matters).

After the game crashes, I can't open some applications like brave, or take screenshots, even rebooting via the menu - I get an error about directories not being writable. When I reboot it boots to emergency mode and btrfs rescue zero-log /dev/nvme0n1p3 fixes the problem for a few hours before it crashes again.

Has anyone experienced similar or can offer a solution?

UPDATED SUMMARY: After a recent OSRS game update (no RuneLite update), I’m getting random GPU crashes while playing OSRS (very low-intensity workload).

RuneLite freezes/exits and the kernel logs repeated NVIDIA Xid 69 errors (name=Client). In some cases the system becomes unstable and I have to restart via the desktop/system menu (not a forced power-off). The restart itself sometimes reports an error, and after reboot Btrfs mounts read-only and requires log recovery (likely due to the crash, not manual power loss).

This never happened before the recent OSRS update.

System:
• Bazzite (Atomic Fedora)
• bazzite-nvidia-open:stable
• NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti Super
• NVIDIA driver 580.95.05
• KDE Plasma (Wayland)
• Btrfs

Notes:
• Not under heavy load
• RuneLite GPU plugin unchanged
• Restart initiated via software, not holding power button
• Appears to be an OSRS/RuneLite rendering pattern triggering a NVIDIA driver issue
• Possibly related to OpenGL / power-state transitions

Testing next:
• Switching to proprietary NVIDIA image
• Disabling RuneLite GPU plugin
• Testing X11

I've also had one crash now when OSRS wasn't running which makes me think its not directly related to the game

I've also noticed from time to time the task bar disappears and comes back shortly after, so maybe a KDE issue?

There are KDE crashes (which I found ways to resolve), and system crashes etc. but what really worries me is that you shouldn't see filesystem corruption like this

NVIDIA Xid 69 sounds driver-related but you're on the latest stable driver so you may be out of luck on Bazzite for now with this game

I don't think anything actually ever got corrupted, I think it was just btrfs locking the file system to protect it from corruption after an nvidia driver crash

I'm thinking its probably some weird edge case with my hardware and KDE on the latest nvidia driver. it's relatively easy for me to reinstall and try gnome as all my important files are on proton drive and I'd just have to reinstall a couple of games (no rush there)

You sounds very comfortable with Linux so you may know this, but if you're trying the KDE / Gnome switch, it's highly advised to completely reinstall Bazzite

Or if the filesystem is locked, open a terminal or ctrl-alt-f3 for the TTY and run journalctl -bjournalctl -b or whatever

if KDE or plasmashell crashes, it would be helpful to post like, the last 1000 lines of the log, and look for segmentation fault / core dump stack traces

If you have any of these, theymay be risk factors for KDE crashes:

Modified the KDE theme at all (e.g. fancy custom theme).
You have the media player control widget in your system tray (e.g. you see a play/stop button while listening to YouTube).
You have a fancy wallpaper (e.g. not a solid color or maybe a picture).

This is the NVIDIA driver bug that may involve KDE / Wayland

So for this specific bug, any time you see a plasmoid (e.g. a notification) appear, I strongly suspect your sync_file handle count will increase.
