I know there's no de

[2023-02-10 12:16:05 PM] : I know there's no definitive answer for this issue, but I'd love to get some feedback and thoughts on it. I've got knowledge and experience that can help my audience (Django Developers), but I know that the solutions I provide could also be easily adapted and used by others in a broader audience (Developers). The pain points are universal across all forms of developers. I'm concerned that by focusing on just the narrow audience, I'm losing out on the larger audience that could easily benefit from the same things. But I also know that writing to a generic audience dilutes the effectiveness of your content (for authority building as well as feeling applicable to the individual reader). I'm not quite so concerned about losing out on potential sales as I am simply not helping the most number of people possible....

Currently I'm runnin

[2023-02-07 11:48:55 AM] : Currently I'm running a new "pioneers" course I recently launched. It is a cohort based affair - first I've done like this - and its throwing up all sorts of left field challenges I hadn't really expected. One is dealing with the "experts" in the room. Any tips on this? It is not that I want to argue with them, more that they are assuming they know some basic stuff and they clearly don't. The issue is they are not giving these fundamentals enough attention and so are g...

Congratulations <@U9

[2023-02-07 11:44:58 AM] : Congratulations jasonswett... For added context, all my consulting work in Olympic sports teams was with people who had been tasked with using data in their work/team (either forced or curious) and didn't have any background in how to do that effectively. Weirdly, they always got the counsel bit free as they were paying typically for a customer software too - data acquisition system or data dash boarding tool. The reasons why many of the projects succeeded was not bec...

interestingly, out o

[2023-02-07 10:48:34 AM] : interestingly, out of the four inquiries i received from my recent “consulting launch”, all four of the prospects had roughly the same scenario: they’re people who don’t have a strong programming background but for one reason or another find themselves in charge of a software system. so it seems to me like the most straightforward thing i can do is this: for my next consulting launch, instead of extending the vague offer of “hire me for consulting”, i can offer a specific service for people who don’t have a programming background but now find themselves in charge of a software system. i can put up a sales page that speaks to the specific pains that such people experience. and in time, i can add testimonials to that page from my existing clients. then maybe next time i launch my services i’ll get some more bites from people who might not have previously imagined that my services fit their needs....

[2023-02-06 03:58:24 PM] : Been moving around with an audience that generally gets limited responses on reddit, and recently I started finding a lot more posts with TONS of feedback. Like, even much more than in some of the excercises! Enough that I've been at one post for an hour, and still just barely halfway with Safari! :eyes: Feels like a big win stumbling upon something that resonates more closely with the excercises from the program!...

Question for the fol

[2023-01-30 12:56:27 AM] : Question for the folks who’ve set up a community, how did you overcome the initial chicken-egg problem of folks being inactive because nobody is active? Any tips or resources on setting up an involved and participating community from the get-go?

[2023-01-24 12:48:38 AM] : Hey guys, when you have multiple ebomb ideas how do you choose which one to work on? Do you guys have a conveyor belt of ideas that you execute one by one? My current process is where I write about something that’s exciting to me right now (it’s easier for me to promote it as well). But I struggle when choosing the next thing because there’s a lot of competing options.

[2023-01-23 02:19:53 PM] : > Based on a 3% survey response the avg subscriber is 45+ years old with 9+ programming experience, whereas I’ve been mostly targeting beginner devs. a couple of things to think about: • is that 3% actually representative of the whole list? are there reasons why the folks you thought were on your list might not respond to a survey (or respond accurately)? • is it possible that someone with 9+ years of experience could still be attracted to a certain kind of beginner-oriented material? ...

[2023-01-23 11:58:39 AM] : I think I remember hearing there was an update to 30x500 to include some extra stuff around using Twitter as watering holes – were there any videos on that? I can't seem to find them

Long-term 30x500 lur

[2023-01-23 11:48:56 AM] : Long-term 30x500 lurker here. This is turning out to be an interesting month. I decided at the start of January to write a book about freelancing (with a bit of a JFS mentality in place); outlined it, wrote the summary, planning to get 1st draft done by end of January. Then all the BigTech layoffs started happening. And I am getting asked the same questions over and again by people I know who think contracting might be the best way to get their bills paid this year. So I've rapidly pivoted from writing a 1st draft to writing a substack newsletter (which is effectively the 1st draft but in single posts which will eventually make up the book). And now I'm wondering: why didn't I plan to do it this way originally? Continuous feedback / building an audience / real questions from real people /etc ...

I’ve done a mini-lau

[2023-01-23 01:01:31 AM] : I’ve done a mini-launch last week with a free giveaway (backend project) to test the waters and now I’m not sure whether to continue developing the product or not. The page has converted okish (10%), but hasn’t been in front of many eyes (240 visitors). The pain is there, I know that my audience pays for this fix format, but I’m not sure I’ve nailed the fix and I guess will only know if people use it and get feedback (hence the free giveaway). I want to wait until someone builds the project at least but with 24 subs the odds are slim. Generally, what criteria do you use to decide whether to continue with a product and persevere, or move on to something else?...

[2023-01-19 03:59:19 AM] : For anyone who is not amazing at predicting how long a project will take..... this advice popped up on my linkedin feed (he used a good PDF... at least a PF) Anyhow, not tried it but interested if you have? [2023-01-13 05:29:49 AM] : Just went on my first safari for safari posts, I was scared that I couldn't find things. After an hour of bookmarking, I now have 326 possible threads for safari practice  And that's just one source  Feeling a bit more relaxed now. Question: when doing safari, do you have a separate file for each thread, or just drop things into one file? What advice you'd give to have some sort of organisation?...

Question for people

[2023-01-11 12:56:12 PM] : Question for people making stuff on gumroad. Have you worked out the best way of asking people for reviews? What I've seen is that reviews are only possible if you have an account and are on the product page, but purchasing something doesn't automatically create an account.
