I can only answer for using an extension. The RHINO has a huge throw on it even without the extension, depending on how you sit in relation to the base the forward throw can be almost too much with the extension (200mm Curved VKB). Software Endstops are great for this though, but a series of physical plates with the different end stops would be even better for that definite clunk when hitting axis end, even just one plate that reduces the forward throw a bit would be good. Tbh I'd rather have the extra throw to play with & use end stops, Walmis is still working on implementing the software end stops even better. Having said all this I do believe the RHINO has enough throw on it you don't have to have an extension if you need to mount it higher & one won't fit, I mean compared to a normal joystick without extension the RHINO's throw is huge & comparing the RHINO with an extension to a VKB/style base with one, it's still a fair bit bigger.
