don't buy anything final sale. But if you need a cheap suit they're hard to beat. I feel like I'm moving into nicer stuff now though

40 Contemporary jackets fit me perfectly I think spier is great for your first 3 suits After that you can start to MTM and branch out Rise is a bit too low on the pants and it’s still a bit slim even contemporary, so I have to size up at least once and have my tailor take the waist in and let out the seat Probably the biggest thing I’d change if I go mtm or buy from a different brand I think the shirting is kinda meh

Tyler11mo ago
I got a contemporary medium casual oxford recently and I'm returning it for a contemporary large. Their contemporary fit shirts are definitely what any other store would call "slim" IMO. For me it's the armpit that's the most limiting factor. Other than that, I love the shirt and I'm excited to get the large one.
awburkey
awburkey11mo ago
Their standard stuff ends up being quite good for the price imo. Anything they try to do with spice just ends up being awful imo. I also second chuck’s thoughts on the general fit

I have a closet full of S&M suits I get a thousand compliments on and that look way better than every other suit at weddings I’ve been too It kinda takes owning and wearing a few of them to understand what they’re missing

i still have the green (?) cotton s&m suit of yours saved but honestly worried spier won’t fit me the same way, especially because of the pants
Chuckflowers
Chuckflowers11mo ago
Yeah that’s one, pants could definitely be slim. They have a buck of measurements but I don’t think any pants open wider than 8” Would be an epic MTM
TheVirt
TheVirt11mo ago
Spier is good for entry level and the vast majority of people don’t need/want to get past that Design-wise they’re pretty much blatantly copying other menswear brands but it’s also not like there’s been that much innovation within the last ~60 years anyway Their fabrics are mostly ok but are always lacking the little key details that I want (e.g. lightweight linens rather than heavier linens) Their choices of pattern are usually pretty ugly tbh and it takes a good eye to identify what to get and what not
jarmul22
jarmul2211mo ago
I love Spier, but wish they could have slightly more consistent fitment between garments in their various fabrics. Never had a major issue, but could go for more consistency. Overall superb for basics, and imo a hard value to beat. Sure, a fair bit comes from other’s catalogues, but if you can get comparable still at like 1/4 of the price, I think that’s chill. Def never thought I’d say this, but their pants are too slim. I busted a side seam in the top block of my chinos the other day, and don’t even have thick thighs.
TheVirt
TheVirt11mo ago
Pants are def on the slim side

I love Spier. Only bought their shirts though. I might try their chinos and shorts but i'm a little concerned with the fitting since i definitely don't wear slim. I'd suggest buying different sizes of the same product, keep the best fitting one, then return the rest for free. Done it quite a few times. Has anyone here ever tried their Paper Chinos? Curious what they mean by "feeling like paper"
awburkey

Dry and a crunchy fabric I presume. The product description seems to nail it tbh

What's the verdict on their chinos and linen pants
jarmul22
jarmul2211mo ago
I like them, especially on sale. I’d suggest going for the contemporary fit, because they tend to be slim. I bought their Hollywood trouser a bit ago and love it. Should have some linen high rise chinos coming in next week too

Nice, thank you And what about the polos So many models so I'm a bit lost on the variety as I'm about to buy a few
jarmul22
jarmul2211mo ago
I’ve only really gotten their Johnny collars. Got one regular one last season with an old button down collar design and it’s too weird. Basically a regular button down collar but on a polo. Also have another knit one that I like. Quality on all of them is pretty good. My oldest are ~2 years now and I haven’t had any problems There are a few too many styles of polo rn tbh
Ace
Ace11mo ago
I'm eyeing the Knit version Might check the Johnny one and the OBDC collar one looks intriguing Will also kop a shirt collar one unless the Johnny one turns out to be class

The knit polos are dope but I had to buy Large when I'm normally a medium. Overall I'm obsessed with Spier and think their stuff is fantastic for the money. I have been wearing their linen shorts, seersucker shorts and shirts, bought a knit linen suit, I love their stuff

I own a number of knitwear items from them and it’s been hit or miss; mostly due to odd sizing and loose stitching. Figure I’d share my thoughts -Knit polos, cotton: Fabric is good. Fit was weird. The polos are long and the sleeves are so tight on the arms they basically cut my circulation (my arms aren’t huge either). At this price point of ~50, I prefer Massimo Dutti for solid color knit polos. Spier is comparable quality to Abercrombie if you like their patterns -Silk/cotton crewneck: Best pieces I’ve bought from Spier. Pricey, but still less than others for a similar product. Fit was perfect, material is nice and high quality, very breathable and perfect for cooler spring/summer days. Colors were nice too, I got a sage and navy one. -100% cotton sweaters: price was so good on these on sale - like 30 usd. Colors are really good. Fit is inconsistent but better than the knit polos. Stitching isn’t great and more loose threads in a couple washes than other brands

Does anyone have experience with/ advice about spier's made to order/custom suits? I'm thinking about trying it but I have some reservations. I'm a masculine-presenting afab woman and pretty close to a 34/36S, but probably not close enough that I could order a 36S and get it altered - I have narrow, square shoulders & 34s are usually too small though the chest/waist/hips. How likely is it that I'll get something decent if I tweak the measurements to account for fit issues I normally have with OTR men's sizes? I have some sewing experience so I understand my measurements & concepts like ease slightly better than a total layperson but online mto/mtm is definitely still a big leap and I don't wanna just throw away ~600usd.
awburkey
awburkey10mo ago
I got a MTM suit from them and it was....fine. I think the measurements ended up being mostly correct. I ordered the wrong size pants entirely. But their pattern is v specific and if you're going to differ from the base pattern significantly I'd heavily consider spending some more money to get measured in person, perhaps by a maker that specializes in tailoring for non-male bodies. There's at least one in NYC but I forget the name.
Wonkymythology
Wonkymythology10mo ago
What would be a significant difference? most of the changes I THINK I'd need to make are at most a couple inches but I get how that could stack up to be a lot. Yeah there are a few in NYC. I went to one for my first and only suit several years ago -kipper clothiers in SF - it was 1800usd and the experience/result sucked. I know a fair bit more now though so I'd probably be a bit more confident this time around.
awburkey
awburkey10mo ago
I'm no expert sadly. 2" sounds like it could be quite a bit tho tbh. You could post basically this in #questions-and-advice to get a bit more traffic and advice from people who know a lot more about suiting than I do

Word to the big boys, their stuff runs small and shrinks pretty bad, so size up and air dry. I did like the polos while they did fit
Ace
Ace9mo ago
What do we think of their overshirts? I've been recommended their chore coats and with their ongoing sale, the former could be interesting as well Are their sizes actually one size bigger than regular shirts? I'm comparing with them with the polo chart and it seems the S is matching the polo M
awburkey
awburkey9mo ago
That would make sense for an overshirt
Ace
Ace9mo ago
Double checking it since it starts at XXS rather than XS and avoiding a skintight fit although I'll only need to fit one layer underneath at most
jarmul22
jarmul229mo ago
It’s not really 1 size bigger, it’s more like “intended to fit as an over shirt” Every time I’ve asked about their larger measurements for outerwear over the last 3 seasons, I’ve always been rather explicitly told not to size down
Ace
Ace9mo ago
They actually emphasized on sticking to your regular size despite one size down's dimensions being slightly bigger than a shirt?

TheVirt
TheVirt8mo ago
Try everything on in person bc their measurements are spotty LOL Also be careful with pattern selection bc a lot of theirs are ass lol Shirts are good, jackets are good value, but I’d recommend contemporary fit vs slim Trousers are decent value but also quite slim Outerwear May be where they shine most tbh
awburkey
awburkey8mo ago
Hard agree with Virt. My general advice is def contemporary fit over slim, stick to their versions of classic items rather than their awful attempts are "interesting" items like the fkin down puffy sport coats 🤢 Also p good to size up on the pants and then get the waist/seat tailored to fit
jfarrell468
jfarrell4688mo ago
Their slim jackets don't fit me, so that's an easy choice. I'm 38R or S in their jackets. For pants, I'm on the fence between 32 slim and contemp. Slim is too small, contemp is too big for pants

I'm interested in the cable-knit that is on sale, but can't decided if the "wider and thicker" refers to the sweater or the cable-knit features. I am a bit worried it will be too thin https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/heather-cream---cable-knit-crewneck-7787-ccb-cnk
jarmul22
jarmul225mo ago
It’s the features — it won’t be a very thick cable knit. Their knitwear is more “I’m wearing this for style” than “It’s fucking cold in the Scottish isles”

I have the navy and like the coat very much. It's suitable for my mid-Atlantic US winter however real winter like in the plains of the US, Sweden, Russia, etc, it's not sufficient. The coat isn't made with a heavy enough fabric for those conditions. O'Connell's in Buffalo will have better coats for serious winter weather.

what are some do and dont buys of Spier & Mackay?
jarmul22
jarmul223mo ago
Do’s: Outerwear, shirts Don’ts: Slim cuts of pants My pants in waywt are a contemporary 34 Hollywood trouser. I’d go up to 35 just for more room in the top block - but altogether they’re still a super slim trouser.

MTM? I ordered a Chambray shirt with a rinse wash on final sale and I have to say that the fit is quite impressive for the price Wish I could say the same about the denim shirt which is a bit too soft for my liking to the point where the folded sleeves come off far too easily

I have bought their linen chore coat but this coat is designed for giant. I bought this in size xxs and the sleeves length is 88cm! I don't remember how long the sleeves length is listed on the website but the sizing is way off.
jarmul22
jarmul223mo ago
How are you measuring the sleeve? Cuz 88cm is longer than the garment by typical measuring points
tmc08130

It's the center back sleeve length, the sleeve length is about 66cm, it is about 5cm longer than the measurement of their size chart.

Benji
Benji2mo ago
Well for one spier is online except for their warehouse you can visit in the Toronto area while the other two have a ton of physical stores Spier's price point and level of make is on the level of suitsupply while men's warehouse is generally much below both

justlooking2mo ago

Spier covers a much wider range of products than Suitsupply, but for suiting the two are fairly comparable. You probably pay a slight premium for Suitsupply but it comes with the benefit of actually getting to try on products w/ a tailor vs having to figure out your own measurements.

yeah i've owned a few different things from spier and at a size 46 i'd have to recommend other brands tbh i like their classic fit shirts but like everything else feels way too slim i also like only wear higher rise pants now and spier caps out at like a 12" rise for their "high rise" trousers
awburkey

Spier's trousers just kinda suck in general unless you're still into the v slim look

I haven't really messed with their shirts tbh other than I think they wanted me to try one out in their new fabric so I was able to get a MTM for free or something.
