Any suggestions for brands or models for a necklace for a guy who wants to just start wearing jewelry?
My wedding band is charcoal grey with sapphire accents if that gives an idea
I'm thinking silver and under 500
mejuri
Does silver turn your neck green?
Iād recommend looking at Etsy for cheap stuff that is probably still silver. Idk if thatāll turn your neck green tho
No but the apc I've got isn't a silver chain.
brass/copper and other alloys jewelry could, and usually cheap silver metals are just silver plated whereas silver/gold doesnāt turn your skin green
Aha then get silver. IMO steel looks kinda cheap, silver is superior and conveys more class/elegance/status. Thatās if you care abt that. So silver will be pricier but Etsy is a way to decrease price.
Tip: search āsterlingā donāt search silver. As silver is both a colour (used to ādescribeā stainless steel) and material. But Sterling is just used in conjunction with silver. So youāll filter out the steel stuff on Etsy with the keyword āsilverā.
Good to know man thanks. Never had a problem with wearing stainless steel but I also donāt wear it for that long. For a permanent chain Iād def go sterling silver.
Does the chain work on top of a turtleneck? This is stainless steel btw
yes looks good
Miansai
@.kyn curious why do u not like mejuri
itās everlane but for jewelry
not sure wym
im all for expensive unique jewelry but for somebody looking for basic jewelryā¦
I agree that thereās nothing wrong, but for someone just starting it might be better to recommend secondhand via Etsy or eBay. Itāll be cheaper and maybe even provide a bit more choice
Especially given that ācharcoal w sapphire accentsā might clash pretty badly with the kind of safe, minimal jewelry that mejuri offers
donāt think anyone has to worry about silver clashing with grey lol
shopping secondhand is great but can be overwhelming esp. for jewelry if you arenāt very specific with keywords, but yes itās great
i'm not a jewelry pro or whatever but i guess it depends on what you're going for? just a simple metal chain necklace, you could get somewhere like mejuri or, an "ethnic" (e.g., indian) gold store if you want gold, or etsy or whatever
if you want something a bit more interesting/unique, i basically use the same method i use to find clothes that exist within an "ecosystem"
i.e,. go to a boutique that has a coherent design aesthetic and see what jewlery/brands they carry
then look up those brands, maybe see if there are pieces on sale, and/or look at other boutiques that carry those and see if there are other brands that are similar
part of me also wants to get one of those soldered gold chain bracelets, but i think it'd probably be a bit impractical (would break etc)

She designed our wedding rings, and she has also done custom jewelry for my wife.
or it tends to look like a wedding band, I also avoid putting rings on my ring fingers as a personal preference cause of wedding bands
Super pleased with it. Itās pretty lowkey, imo, but they have all sorts of pendants and things of thatās more your jam
werkstatt muchen doesn't make rings in my ring sizes very often which is very annoying
nice thanks, and you can double it up so it sort of looks like one chain anyway, right? I also like this one: https://world.werkstatt-muenchen.com/necklace-sculpture?qty=1

A composition of hand filed geometric shapes is blending into the longer chain parts. These also alternate - a shiny part is paired with a simple curb chain part and a twisted curb chain part.

So Iāve heard of the ānever mix different colored jewelryā rule that mostly applies to metals.. if I daily wear a black Apple Watch does that pretty much take all other jewelry out of the question? I donāt see myself wearing a black necklace or black rings or anything
Yeah, this is it in choker mode
Iāve been wanting a lowkey gold chain(20-22inch 2.5-3.5mm depending how it looks on me) but idk if itād look off with a black Apple watch
an apple watch precludes your wrist from looking good š
it doesn't matter
thats mostly cause non-precious metals will be noticeably dull next to precious metals
but i have a ring with 14kt gold inlay, i want a necklace with a gold part on silver
you can mix if you want
This rule is not a thing. Iām currently wearing six different materials on five different pieces of jewellery
I want something lowkey like this, no pendant or anything but yeah just donāt want it to clash with a black Apple Watch
basic gold/silver chains will work on anyone
I wouldnāt worry about matching anything to an Apple Watch
Is jacoje generally the go-to for something like this? Or can I find better price elsewhere
i mean secondhand won't exactly have selection but its generally the cheapest
The nomos goes crazy
I regret showing my watch
No ragrets
1. apple watch isn't jewlery
2. the don't mix metals "rule" is stupid
and also idk how an apple watch has any bearing on a chain/necklace
generally, i think the apple watch looks kinda lame and detracts from an outfit overall if you reeeeally care that much
but i like the functionality so i'm willing to live with it
maybe someone should make actually good apple watch bands that are more like bracelets or cuffs or something
ATOLYESTONE
Cuban Links Leather Bracelet
Cuban links leather bracelet by Atolyestone is an elusive addition to your outfit. Designed in silver and combined with blue, dark green, red, and navy nappa leather.
Someone in a Q&A thread shared this brand. It's really nice stuff. I like this bracelet but don't fully understand what's with the diamond looking things on the Cuban links? They don't really explain what material that is
This is pretty overpriced for leather and Gold Plated Silver. I'm guessing the stones are either CZ or Glass. For those materials you should be paying tens of dollars, not hundreds. Imo if they won't tell you materials up front they're not a reputable jeweler.
For a couple hundred dollars cheaper you can get a solid gold Curb Bracelet. If you want something with the same look get a 4mm width.

Also saw this on etsy. Don't worry about the "for her" this style will totally work on men
For basic chains I'd recommend Mejuri if you want to know what it looks like based on pictures, and Sarraf if you're cool with paying less for pictures that don't actually indicate what you're getting.
It looks like the prices at Jacoje are pretty good, I don't know anything about their quality but you probably won't get much cheaper than that for new.
Vintage jewelry is a hole. If you want recommendations I have them but be forewarned it might take over your life
Also it won't clash with your apple watch. I think some of the other people here are being too mean about the apple watch. If you want the watch to look more stylish look into different bands. Basically everyone wears smartwatches these days, they're a pretty neutral accessory.
Mixing metals is not a hard and fast rule, and even then it would apply more to hanging a rose gold pendant on a yellow gold chain
I'm being pretty up front with how much I paid for everything--a couple of these I wouldn't have bought at the price I paid if I were buying them now but that doesn't mean I regret buying them.
Gotta disagree that 'basically everyone wears smartwatches', not even close to true.
I will admit I live in San Francisco so my perception is probably skewed on that point
I'm also not of the opinion that Apple Watches are particularly good looking, just that they're neutral.
As an item they're neutral but can still clash with other stuff.
I'm incredibly biased toward hating mixed metals, two tone watches in particular, so probably ignore me
Smartwatch will actively detract from a bunch of outfits without any techy elements, eg: prep, ivy, menswear
If people can wear dive watches with menswear and not get called out, you are perfectly fine wearing a smart watch
I think the solution is move to the Bay Area and then nobody will consider your smartwatch to clash with anything.
I took the Apple Watch hate online with a grain of salt anyway lol itās my most complimented watch IRL and realistically most people donāt give a shit about other watches unless itās a Rolex or Cartier or something
My concern originally was the black metal possibly clashing with other jewelry, not that the watch itself might not look good
It definitely won't clash, especially since you're wearing them on different parts of your body.
Did you end up ordering the chain from Jacoje? If you get it, let us know how the quality is
Apple Watches are fine but they are not fashionable

Their website isn't super user friendly and their pictures aren't great, but I can vouch for their quality on everything I've bought. If you're cool with something mass-produced this is as close to wholesale pricing as you're likely to get
Then you can always buy charms separately. Make sure the chain is at least as heavy as the charm if you do that
Thanks, so can any charm basically work with any necklace ?
You can mix and match chains and charms, yes. There's gonna be a few considerations for that
1. (I already said this) the chain should be at least as heavy as the charm/pendant so the chain doesn't get damaged.
2. Only hang a pendant off of a solid chain (not hollow, semi-hollow, or puffy) also for avoiding damage.
3. The chain should be thin enough to fit through the bale of the pendant (The bale is the ring that you put the chain through)
4. Usually you want the pendant and chain to be the same metal, but that's not anywhere close to a hard and fast rule. I'm literally breaking that rule right now and wearing a rose gold charm on a silver chain.
That thing the arrow is pointing to is the bale
Personally I find that you get the most versatility buying chains and pendants separately
Also it tends to be cheaper
@drew_fc I also realized I linked you to Sarraf and it has a bunch of length and thickness combinations that can be super overwhelming. If you need help picking a size you can dm me or ask for help in the thread. The closest to the chain you posted would be 18 in long and 1mm thick.
Dude thanks a lot for explaining this for me
Ok thanks. I'm also going for a more subtle color than yellow gold. I didn't see white gold on that site for the box chain but I'm on mobile and will check on PC later. I also like the idea of tarnished silver or even like a darker metal like a titanium.
Appreciate you offering to help me pick it. I really like that one I linked with the bayonet clasp but didn't not sure about the skull
Sarraf does have white gold box chains in both 14k and 10k. If you're doing white gold there won't be much of a color difference with the lower gold purity so I might steer you to that. I'd recommend browsing on PC. Their website design is not great but I still recommend them.
Silver and white gold do look different, and if you want the look of silver then definitely go for that. The other reason to go for silver is that it's cheaper than gold. Also if you specifically want tarnished silver then great you can just leave your chain out and never take care of it and it'll tarnish on its own.
I need to look into gold bracelets at some point to replace my sterling silver one
I recently bought an 18k gold chain cause for summer fits, gold is king imo
Iāve tried rings before and they just werenāt me, didnāt feel too comfortable wearing multiple rings

As far as looking at vendors for gold chains and bracelets, I'd recommend Sarraf for new stuff (sorry if I sound like a broken record).
If you're cool looking at Vintage, Joseph Robert Jewelers is a good source for gold jewelry. They're an estate seller in Connecticut so their stuff has the flashy Italian Grandpa vibe (I mean this in a positive way).
Be aware when looking at their stuff--some of it is hollow/not solid. That's not a bad thing but it will mean it's less durable.

I took a look at their jewelry and the thing to consider is that the materials they use are not expensive. It's mostly aluminum and brass, I saw one piece with a platinum plating (plating generally doesn't add very much to matetial cost).
Their designs are unique, just be aware that that's what you're paying for. For me personally I wouldn't spend this much on fashion jewelry.

It's all Gold Vermeil which is ever so slightly different (thicker gold layer than plated) but still not solid gold. I think the prices for that seller are high for vermeil, I'd steer you to the sellers I recommended for more basic stuff.

Solid write up. I pretty much only wear thin chains i pair
Btw a couple tips for shopping on Ruby Lane.
1. If the listing is missing info you want, or if you want clearer pictures, you can ask the seller.
2. Try to look in the pictures and description to see if there's signs of damage and if the description matches the pictures. If there's a clear mismatch that's a sign the seller isn't reputable. A reputable seller well be up front about any damage.
3. The seller should be able to explain how they know what the material is. For gold and silver it'll either have a hallmark our they should acid test it. If they don't explain this in the description you should ask.
For small silver charms you should generally be paying $30-50 tops for vintage and antique.
@nergalmeslamstea since you seem to be the resident gold expert
What are your thoughts on maintaining your pieces? Does it make sense to swim in the sea and shower while still wearing gold, or will it damage it over time?
Gold is easy to maintain. Swimming and showering with gold jewelry won't ruin it, but it's not good for it either. If you do it once in a while it's fine but super regularly it might wear down faster with saltwater or chlorine, especially more delicate pieces. I personally wouldn't make a habit of doing that except for maybe wedding bands since they're just solid hunks of gold.
As far as maintenance, store it in a jewelry box and not the bottom of a drawer so it doesn't get scratched or kinked. For lighter chains you can hang it on a hook like this one: https://www.containerstore.com/s/closet/jewelry-boxes-storage/yamazaki-tosca-accessory-stand/12d?productId=11002917&country=US¤cy=USD&cid=cse%7cPMAX%7cGoogle%7cTCSP_X_US_EN_Storage_PMAX_X_18200107324___en%7c&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=pla&adpos=&scid=scplp10067898&sc_intid=10067898&gclid=CjwKCAjw5_GmBhBIEiwA5QSMxKsJ0B_DQKSGWyff5QOy52PcxRGLkJ2Ab4aQyvMABKkOZl0zzS6eaRoCEJwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Amazing, thank you for the in-depth answer!
Ok so I think I decided I'd like a titanium chain or one that has that grayish color as a box chain. Basically I'm looking for this but as a square box and not rounded. Struggling to find it anywhere, curious if you had any ideas of shops to check out
Unfortunately I don't have any recs for basic titanium jewelry off the top of my head. I'll take a look later and see if I can find anything
Ok thanks. Even stuff like this says square but seems rounded to me
Men's Strong Square Link Fine Titanium Necklace - Etsy

For titanium I know there's a lot on etsy, I just don't have specific sellers in mind
Oh you beat me to it lol
General advice for buying on etsy is look at reviews. If there's a lot of them, and they're mostly positive, and the negative ones don't sound like a big deal to you, then you're probably good.
Also if one seller's stuff is way more expensive than average that's a bad sign
Ok thanks. Do you agree that looks more rounded than square? It seems common that box chains are rounded by default
Sorry, missed the question. I agree that it's a bit rounded, there's a bit of a continuum there but you're never gonna get perfect 90Ā° angles on box chain links. That'll be more obvious the thicker the chain is. How much that matters to you is totally personal preference, you should pick a chain that looks best to you
I would describe it as a square box chain because of the overall profile
Is there a good guide somewhere for how to get into jewelry? I've always only worn a watch, but I would like to add something more like a ring but I wouldn't even know where to start
Up
When I first got into this, I looked at the guide on the MFA subreddit for bracelets and then spent like $80 on a leather bracelet at Miansai. Unfortunately there's not much resources for men getting into jewelry and most of what's out there pushes people towards overpriced fashion jewelry.
If you're interested in rings, there are a couple recommendation for silver rings in this thread. If you're cool paying for gold, you can also check out Automic Gold: https://www.automicgold.com/collections/rings
I'd also recommend just going to a local jeweler or even a department store and trying stuff on to see what you like. The department store jewelry counter won't have good prices, but you can see how certain styles look on you and then make some decisions based on that.

Does buying used silver jewelry count? Pretty sure both my chain bracelet and one of my rings are less than $100 (though the rings lame tbh). Also honorable mention to the ring I use as a pinky ring that I got used and paid slightly over $100 for cause it has a 14kt gold inlay
I'd say that counts. Where do you buy used jewelry?
Local jewelry shop sells a bunch so thats where I've bought mine
I know there's internet resellers (some charge insane prices), and like estate sales
Can also check vintage stores
Some pawn shops
Yeah, I wouldn't want to direct someone to Ruby Lane or Loupe Troop if they aren't starting with some baseline knowledge. You'll probably find the best deals there but you have to know what to look for
Ya, mine is just a new england chain with a brick and mortar location v close to me
I also know some good antique jewelry shops in San Francisco but they tend more towards the high end
Ya, my focus is on silver jewelry in general which never gets that expensive tbh
Agreed, I say for most silver jewelry you shouldn't pay more than $150 unless it's either handmade, very heavy, or really unique. You can get good silver jewelry for under $100 pretty easily.
Another thing: I don't have this but @yeahcilantro had a fit where he was wearing this silver bangle: https://studebakermetals.com/products/studebaker-cuff?variant=30282467442791

Any other accessible jewelry recs under $100?
These look pretty cool.
Thanks, good idea to check out a store. I can look for stuff on Vinted or Etsy later to see if I can get it cheaper
Etsy does have a lot of good jewelry, but as with anything on there be sure to research the seller to make sure they're legit and the reviews are good. Feel free to post anything here if you want a second opinion
Sunglasses talk?
Maybe that should be its own thread
Ok I made a new thread
my wedding ring ayoo
Thanks, so basically there's not like the equivalent of Uniqlo in Jewelry its more like, walk on the street and try some little jewelries shops ?
Probably the equivalent of Uniqlo would be Mejuri
They have some storefronts in big cities but they're mostly online
Hmm and the silver its good ?
Like 925 or idk
people told me to check for some numbers when u want to cop Jewelries stuff
Yeah buy 925.
Mejuri uses 925 sterling silver
In America, "sterling silver" refers to alloys that are 92.5% silver. What your friends were referring to is called a hallmark, meaning that the jewelry is stamped with something indicating the material.
For gold you'll see either "14k/18k" or "585"/"750" to refer to the gold purity
For a bigger brand like Mejuri you can also refer to general information they have about the material. 925 sterling silver is absolutely standard in most western countries, you'll usually see lower silver purity in antique pieces
For rings the hallmark is usually on the inside. For chains it's usually on the clasp, and with pendants it's on the bale or the reverse
Ik some companies use heavier additives to the 925 resulting in same size different weight pendants
My chrome hearts stuff is heavier than stuff I get from mejuri
But typically 925 is enough
Also, you might have more luck finding jewelry at a local small business. It really depends, Mejuri doesn't have the absolute best or absolute cheapest jewelry but it's good, accessible, and reasonably priced.
There are multiple alloys used for sterling silver: 7.5% copper is most traditional but sometimes they'll use other metals to help prevent tarnishing.
(I deleted my original comment and rewrote it, I got confused between some facts about silver and gold alloys)
thanks !
I dont usually wear any jewelry apart from a charriol cable bangle. Where would be a good place to start for necklace or a ring? Any simple/minimal pieces for < Ā£100-200?

Got it. Thanks!
man you got me tempting to spend 2.5k casually in here lol
I need to drag you down into this hole with me
haha, I think I'll get white gold before yellow though
For sure, I'm not seriously suggesting spending 4 figures on something you're not 100% about
My wife is already in the hole, her wedding ring was like 5k, she tricked me thinking I got in easy with a sapphire engagement ring and then asked for an icy wedding band
I bought some silver stuff this week to try things out
a few things came and I fucked up measuring my wrist, not sure if I can modify it somehow or if a jeweler can. The one thing shipped from Turkey via etsy, not sure its worth the exhhange hassle it was 20 bucks
Is it too long or too short?
Jewelers can remove links but it might be cheaper to get a new one
too long
Got it. You could have it shortened but it probably won't make financial sense if it's that cheap
I think I'm 0/2 on jewelery, the chain I bought came, its a 20in 2.5mm titanium chain and it fits on my like a choker. I guess I have a thicc neck lol
I feel like maybe jewelery and watches are things that are hard to just buy online if you have no experience before
Ah that sucks. Unfortunately it's hard to know what you like for jewelry based on pictures, trying things on in a store is helpful.
Did the shop you bought the titanium chain from have a return/exchange policy? If you want it in a longer length you can try that. I usually recommend cutting a piece of string to the length you're considering so you can see how it sits on you.
If you're cool sharing a picture can I ask to see the chain on you? No worries if you'd rather not
String method is good
I'll snap a pic when I get a chance. Looks like they will take a return though
This is 20in and my neck measures 17. Probably need a 24
Just got thus bracelet from Etsy and it's pretty cool
Might be a keeper
It doesn't look bad at all, but yes that's choker length for sure. Adding 4 inches should be a good versatile length, I'd recommend the string method to see how it'll sit first
I like this bracelet a lot! Who was the seller?
@nergalmeslamstea you wouldnāt know where to find 925 or titanium safety pins for necklace closures would you?
The gf has a few necklaces from a couple designers with it and I need a shorter choker length.
Iād rather not go to CH and take the safety pins off a different necklace
(Admittedly terrible use case for titanium, itās too malleable at the weight/size of small safety pin)
I've never personally bought one but it looks like they're pretty easy to find on etsy for under $50
Also a bunch on Rubylane for vintage but they don't seem much cheaper
Safety pins are a really common jewelry motif so you should have plenty of options. As with anything on Etsy, be sure to read reviews and make sure they have a good return policy.
Now that I mention the malleability aspect Iām curious if I can just bend one around a hand form
(For a ring)
I was hoping for a wholesaler or mass order for it ngl. Friends are making jewelry and have interest in it as well.
The only jewelry wholesaler I can personally recommend is Sarraf, and their silver selection is a bit limited. I have to imagine that there will be multiple wholesalers that sell this but most jewelry wholesalers I've found only sell to you with a business ID.
You could also try talking to a local jeweler you trust and see if they're willing to order this for you. Of course this means there'll be a surcharge but that might be the best option.
I'm gonna ask a couple friends in my gc for advice on this
I do still need to consult some people. I think the prices theyāre paying for their chain is insane so any wholesalers reliable would be good
https://www.riogrande.com/product/sterling-silver-safety-pins/615886GP/?code=615887
My partner recommended looking at Rio Grande or Stuller for wholesale. They are both true wholesalers, meaning you have to set up a business account to order from them. According to her the two of them are the standard companies that most American jewelers go through for wholesale ordering.
Caveat: Neither I nor my partner nor any of my friends are actual jewelers. They know this because they follow forums that are full of actual jewelers and have picked up this knowledge from them. Most of what I know is from things they repeated from those sources.

All vintage Navajo items from around 100 years ago
I do not have $1200 to spend on a bracelet though
Any good recos for modern Navajo jewelry that won't break the bank?
I really like the stone polish, cool as hell necklace
I'm pretty sure the pictures on the website are of the stone polish since they have a rougher surface texture. High polish would be a more classic polished silver look. Imo the stone polish looks pretty cool and is more distinctive
This chain is hallmarked 14k, but apparently failed the magnet test. Pretty much no chance itās actually gold, right?
Depends on what your actual budget is and how much you want truly authentic Navajo items. Folks like Red Rabbit a lot (myself included) but they're not actually native in any way afaik.
When you say "Failed the magnet test" do you mean you put it up to a magnet and it stuck?
You should take this to your local jeweler to have it tested. They'll either do an acid test or use a gold testing machine. Should cost like 5 bucks and will be more accurate.
Where did you get this?
Hard to tell from the photo, but stainless steel and white gold do look and feel different.
I havenāt bought it yet, the seller says they took it to a jeweller and it was magnetic, but for whatever reason they didnāt acid test. Iāll probably avoid, donāt really wanna gamble with $100 (although that would be very cheap for solid gold).
Got it, I'd say not to get it, it's not hard to find gold jewelry
I'm assuming this is vintage, a fair price would be around 2-3x melt price, with the higher end for more unique designs and lower end for more common styles. If this is really light then $100 might not be that great of a deal
If your looking for cheaper vintage gold, look at Smashing Gold on Etsy. They're an estate seller and sell everything at 30% over melt. I will say that their stuff tends to sell really fast.
Iāll check that out, thanks

where else could i find ring styles like this?
Where are you looking and why would you not be able to buy from there?
vitaly
i am strangely engrossed by how those looked
but there's only 3
and i feel like there's prob stuff out there too
So the knuckleduster ring that we were talking about in this thread a couple days ago would be a good option if you wanted to upgrade from steel to silver. It seems like this style is usually called an armor or armour ring from what I can see, but you can also search for hinged ring or knuckle ring to find some other options
Hot Topic tbh
LOL
š
fr though this definitely the sort of thing you'll need to try on in person
like i see this ring set for 75 that i can cop on etsy for like 20 bucks so just don't wanna like randomly find a similar style elsewhere for this hinged stuff afterwards
i think all the storefronts are candian but return policy is coolio
gonna poke at hot topic too i guess
Sizing them is strange for me at least since my knuckles are so much wider than the digits on my fingers
this seems like a spray and pray moment for me
Theyāre very clunky and impractical if you work with your hands
Return policies are helpful.
go for it king
If it makes you feel any better, I have some Vitaly rings and they're solid. One of the benefits of stainless steel is that it's extremely low maintenance and really hard to ding up. Silver is a nicer material, but the trade-off is that it needs to be treated a little better
I wouldn't necessarily call silver high maintenance, but basically you want to make sure you store it properly and take it off when you're showering, exercizing, or cleaning. Also if it tarnishes you can always polish it
The nice thing about silver is that wearing it regularly helps prevent tarnish.
It's not gold/steel levels of "just ignore it" but silver maintenance is negligible ime
Only thing not worth bothering with it is earrings, since taking those out is a pain comparatively
The only use for white gold I've ever found is my studs lol
Wouldn't you want to avoid silver with any piercings that you plan to leave in?
I don't have piercings but I had thought you only want to use non-reactive metals for those
I have no idea, I've seen mixed things on how much it matters
I went with white gold + titanium for mine to be safe
Like the posts are titanium and the jewelry is hammered white gold
I would avoid silver unless it's earrings you'll have to take out anyway (eg: dangly ones)
I'm planning to get my ears pierced this fall, I guess I can just ask that piercer what they think
Ya I'd check with them, I went with gold cause it's non-reactive, like I said only usecase I've found for white gold yet
Rest of my jewelry is silver
The other advantage is that gold is harder than silver so if you're doing an intricate setting or setting a gemstone it can work better.
For stuff like a thick chain or cuff silver's great and it'll be way cheaper than white gold.
Good to know, my personal style definitely has no use for it beyond earrings but it's good to know there are other uses for it
Get implant grade titanium on new piercings. Itāll heal cleaner and faster.
Well I'm done spending money for like a year

Looking for a rec for a bracelet
Something masculine but not really metallic?
Maybe braided or something leathery
Kind of like the style of stuff Springsteen wears
I don't have specific brand recs but I would look on Etsy for Braided Leather bracelets if you specifically like this style. There's a ton of options and you can get them pretty cheap.
The other styles you could look at would be rope/cord bracelets and bead bracelets. Both you can find on Etsy as well, and also @Legs recommended https://www.lemonandline.com/ for rope bracelets

I'm currently working on an updated jewelry guide (already messaged the mods) so if anyone else has specific brand recommendations I would also appreciate knowing
If you haven't read the existing bracelet guide in #fashion-guides I'd recommend looking at that. However, I do personally disagree with some of the recommendations. When I first got into jewelry I bought a leather bracelet from Miansai and I don't think it's bad but I could definitely get something really similar for a lot cheaper.

recently got a couple of silver rings. i was wondering, what is the proper way to store it? incidentally looked this thread up hoping to ask about storage options and recs for rings/jewelry
one of em
1. I love it, where's it from?
2. Get anti-tarnish bags. I just ordered some off Amazon.
It's also not like, you look at it wrong and it tarnishes. If you wear it while handling caustic chemicals or leave it on a counter for weeks to months at a time then it'll tarnish
I'm lazy and sometimes leave my stuff out for a couple days and it's been fine so far
Maple Co. It was the last in stock at a big retailer and had an insane discount so jumpd at the chance. I never really had used rings before, so seemed like an alright way to test things out.

Those are cool! The two things I'd mention are that
1. They're not made of silver, "silver" is the color and they're made of zinc. I think the price is appropriate for the material though.
2. You can't remove the pendant on either of these. This doesn't bother me but you might want to keep that in mind if you get something more expensive.
Good points
Is zinc a decent metal for jewellery?
As long as it's cheap yeah
It can tarnish is the other downside
I would say Silver would be better, but it will be a bit more expensive (you can get a chain like this for closer to $100). It's fine to get less expensive materials if you like the design and especially if you just want to see whether you want to wear jewelry in general. I talk about price a bunch because there are some sellers that will charge you way more than this for inexpensive materials.
doesn't zinc stain the skin?
It can, lots of jewelry is plated zinc tho, so no staining.
Yeah Iām mainly concerned about that
Then avoid the ones you linked tbh. If you find jewelry that's silver or gold plated zinc you should be fine tho.
Stainless steel would be your budget option if price is a consideration, so I'd start by looking for jewelry made from that to avoid any skin discoloration.
Thanks, thatāll make searching a lot easier
TIL. I knew about this with brass but didn't put 2 and 2 together and realize it was the zinc that was the problem.
Anyways, ignore what I said before, don't get zinc jewelry

Plenty of watches are made of uncoated brass, you should be fine
That bracelet is plated anyway, the only real issue I could see is it getting scuffed and showing the brass, but for the price seems fine.

It is not too late
Hey, turning 27 this year but close enough. I just got my ears pierced 2 weeks ago and my only thought so far has been "wow why didn't I do this earlier"

used, if live in a city look for used jewlery places

theres probably vintage jewlery stores
plus online
though obv if you actually want like gold, thats never gonna be cheap
Ill keep a look out the next time im in Cologne or Dortmund - propably some stores there.
Nah, for the beginning im happy with everything that does not stain my fingers š
ya, i would expect theres options, silver jewlery is also relatively cheap in general (compared to gold). Pawnshops will work as well (obv you might have a moral reason to avoid a pawnshop but)
should be a good starting spot
True, pawnshops would feel (and most likely are) morally questionable
I'm turning 44 this year and only started wearing jewelery like a year ago, AMA š
speaking of, I really need some inspo for more casual jewelery, especially necklaces/pendants, that sorta thing. Anyone got any latent ideas hanging about for more outdoors/casual looks. Anything on leather looks interesting but I've no idea where to start
Where did you get your jewellery from in the U.K.
Pointing out that gold is currently at the 3rd highest price in history so now isn't the best time to buy gold jewelry if you want to save money.

Does anyone have any recommendations for specific styles of chain to search for? I'm tired of men's jewellery sections being 99% curb chains and want something a little more interesting.
few samples from googling "chain types"
For the record most jewelry is unisex, and the marketing is completely based on the fact most men don't buy jewelry
don't limit yourself to mens jewelry sections
Outside of basic chain types plenty of smaller brands might do chains that are more inline with their style - distressed, hammered, jewels added, darkened, etc
Thanks, those are helpful infographics. I struggle with shopping online for them and knowing what size is appropriate for each style as 5mm in one type looks wildly different to 5mm of another type.
I guess I should also ask what's popular these days?
I don't limit myself to the men's section - I'm not even a man - but a lot of the women's stuff is too dainty for me and it's hard to gauge from online shopping.
Well, nothing beats seeing jewelry in person to get an idea of length/size, even if you don't buy it there.
I mean, whats popular is probably cuban link or box, but Jewelry is very personal in general if you ask me.
I wear my jewelry every day regardless of outfit so I have mostly jewelry I really like cause its one of the most permanent parts of my style.
Basically I wouldn't worry about popularity, just find something that speaks to you.
I view jewelry as slightly less permanent tattoos from a style perspective.
I recognize thats not super helpful lol
Yeah, I have been meaning to go look for jewellery in person but between work, life, and disability, it just hasn't happened yet!
Go try some stuff on, you might surprise yourself, I did!
Well I was in Camden market in London today and saw plenty of jewellery but wasn't into any of it!
Just had these made! They represent amihan and habagat, the two monsoons in my country.
Man, love that
stupid ass question
how do you figure out your ring size
go to a jewelry shop and get it measured or buy a cheap sizer online and take a few different measurements at different times of the day
ok thats what i thought thanks!
are ring sizes consistent?
between stores
there are standards yes
have you heard of google.com?
its banned in my country sorry
Smiles donāt be mean he opened with āstupid questionā
yes they're consistent. there's also conversion charts for ring sizes online which can help if buying online
I wear size x/11 lol
Any recommendations for jewellery brands to get introduced to wearing jewellery?
secondhand
Fair
Mejuri I guess but if anything I'd try stuff on at their stores to see what you like then just buy it on eBay.
Good idea, also the idea of picking up a few items at a vintage shop might help
If you can find a vintage shop that specializes in jewelry that's better. Regular vintage shops are more likely to have costume and fashion jewelry.
Being inexperienced in the market Iād feel more comfortable at a more general fashion/clothing store
You'll get ripped off at those
But it's your life
Ah shit I shouldāve just posted here instead of #fashion
Smiles is right you will get immensely ripped off buying designer jewelry at retail and often even on sale
Gonna link to my post (and the subsequent ones if you scroll a little) instead of cross posting

costume jewelery is also fine though

Oh, thats cute
honestly the only thing that matters is that you like it. Dressing is about vibes, and l that's even more tru for jewelry. most pieces are so small people won't notice the details unless they're really paying attention.
Of course. I like that itās subtle but also has some character
Just need to choose a size
Cute in a good way?
Yes!
One I found randomly on Instagram, looks like some cool stuff
https://frederickgrove.com/
FREDERICK GROVE LTD
Sterling silver jewellery handmade in London
Frederick Grove is a third generation jeweller working alongside his team in East London to produce hand crafted pieces, designed and manufactured in store.
It's a little odd that this one just does small medium and large, most rings are sold by pretty granular size (looks like your in australia so it'll be a letter) and even a millimeter difference can change how a ring fits
If you don't know your size you can go to a jeweler and they should measure you for free
A ring should be loose enough to remove and not constrict your finger, but tight enough that it doesn't fall off on its own
possibly a size chart for that
I could possibly check that at home with a tape measure
You can buy ring size guides for a couple bucks as well
yeah ring sizers are far more accurate and super cheap. You should be able to find them at any mall if u don't want to order online.
Would this be fine? https://amzn.asia/d/07RB7243

Ring Sizer Measuring Gauge, 1-17 US Rings Size, Plastic Finger Sizing Measure Tool, Reusable
I'm pretty sure I've used that exact one lol
Yes!
Awesome, Iāll add that next time I order from Amazon
You can also go to a jewelry shop and they'll size you for free
I got one from amazon that came with a bunch of metal rings in the sizes. Was nice to put something rigid on to test throughout the day

yup, looks very similar to that
Jewelry guys, what are your thoughts
Not for me honestly, but I'm a terribly basic bitch
depends on your style & the fit with it tbh. seen a lot of dudes get jewelry in this style and wear the most boring fit because they think the jewelry is interesting enough on its own.
This kinda tough
Honestly it's nit exactly my taste. I love sweet leaf jewelry. It fits my style better. But I also tend to stay away from gems over all.
The face with the moving eyelids is super cool
Totally. I wounder if it's mechanical or an optical illusion
Thoughts on these two earrings? I typically ware a dark academy style
It's mechnical, i follow the brand on IG
Hard to say without fit pics but they look pretty easy to wear to me.
neat, amber?
Yep! Got it for a steal
Nice cop!
Getting into the ring game
Needs to be adjusted for a bit so it fits my ring finger
Found a good place for secondhand jewelry two towns over
woah, thats rad
Also works as a bandana holder in case i want to look lika a yeehaw boyscout lol
Different question from the usual: What are your thoughts on ring distribution? Should one try to somewhat balance the amount of rings between both hands or is it fine to go all out on one hand and leave the other one empty?
I think my issue with rings is that I feel like I need to go all out or do nothing to achive a good look
https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1230219608905220117/1230233998505152553
I went from 0 -> ā¦ -> 5-6 -> ā¦ -> 4 in terms of daily rings with 2 on each hand for now
but thatās what works for me, today, with the rings I have
I might buy a vivienne Westwood armor ring (again) which is BIG and will shift the look of things
4 armor rings on each hand:thinkbutt:
do not tempt me
unfortunately I donāt think the XL is big enough for at least 2 of my fingers but maybe Iām wrong
Oh shit they have XXL now???
but they often sell out of L-XL before sale
bruh their XXL is only 9.5-9.75?
I'm a 11-12 on my index/middle fingers, let me tell you its hella annoying
For context a previous ssense order
Ssense says itās a 12.5?
This feels wrong tho I tried on a S and a M yday and they barely fit my pinky which is like a 6.5-.75 iirc
Armour Ring in PLATINUM | Vivienne WestwoodĀ®
Our Armour ring showcases articulated sections that are crafted to adapt to the movement of the finger, drawing inspiration from the protective plates found on armadillos. The base metal ring is embellished with four sterling silver sections that overlap, overlaid with our orb motif.
their site
What a madman
has very different values
I think their site is more accurate
Very funny to me that the store has these on sale rn for like
$300 or less
But neither ssense nor the site do
These are pretty cool!
good to know. I think i will just see what i can dig up. The flea market I was at yesterday had like 4-5 pretty well curated jewelry stalls. Next time im there im gonna really dig in and see what i can find.
Low key regret that I passed by one of these pointy finger tips. But I think it would not really fit into what im going for rn anyway
It can be easy to get too heavy/statementy with rings I have found, especially buying online. That can be fine if itās intentional and works with the rest of the fit, but I found myself having to scale back a bit to actually hit a vibe that works for me.
I bought a new ring recently which is winging its way to me, so I'll have one on each hand including the wedding ring
In my experience subelty is a learning curve.
I got a ring sizer off Amazon and for my middle and ring fingers Iām either a 7.5 or 8 US
Those are the two fingers Iād consider having a ring
Fwiw Iād consider going up from the size you measured and getting them fitted. My jeweler said not to use ring sizers, because itās also about the shape of the ring and how your finger joints compare to the rest of your finger
Update: I DIY widened the ring after the jeweler asked for more than the buying price to do it properly. Thinking it looks much better on the middle finger.
Also gets less in the way
How did you do that?
Or rather - is there a guide you followed?
The dirty way
I just used a clipper and manual force
Need to file the edges smooth
Don't know if it will hold up long time though
If the ring ends up failing completely i can still salvage the carved plate and attach a bolo-tie blank
Ah I see. Was the ring closed before or was it already open?
It was closed before
And once it was open it was relatively easy to deform bc the band is rather narrow
I see, it think itās a bit wild for me, but you go šŖš»

The spider ring goes hard. Not my thing, but goes hard
Should I get a second of this ring so I can do this?
It could work, gives you options and iirc wasn't crazy expensive?
Yeah theyāre $60 AUD, so not crazy expensive
Treated myself

have u tried baking soda + vinegar?
jm gonna tn
it's my go to and u can eat it
coke n mentos challenge but its ur guts š
do u need to do the aluminum lining ? or just the mixture is ok
the aluminum stuff freaks me out that's alchemy, I just use a non-coarse rag and the mixture, hasn't let me down yet
Cola is really good at cleaning silver. Just soak it for a few hours.
then you get a lil drink afterwards too
it's perfect
sadge my node ring is slightly too small. going to ask if he can do a half size adjustment š¦
Whatās the best country to find solid yellow gold jewelry for affordable prices?
solid gold jewelry is never going to be particularly cheap because gold itself is expensive
Gold has a standardized spot price worldwide and jewelry is gonna be similarly priced everywhere. If you want to save money either buy secondhand or from a wholesaler.
the day of the shoemergency i ALSO bought these
currently trying to figure out the ring balance especially since i'm a daily watch wearer
oh i fw these
same place as the shoes?
these were at courthouse flea but the seller bounces between there and georgetown
that index finger ring in particular :chefskiss:
Any recs on places to look for rings in NYC
Great frog, chrome hearts, katheās, maybe other stuff in https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1225474969207570472
bet ty!
It's appointment only but Alpha & Omega Jewelry has a great selection of antique and vintage jewelry.
I've only bought from them online but depending what you want it could be worth checking out
just bought a jill platner thick wiggle ring i'm rocking with
the hunt has a little bit
This style + volition from disco elysium? I've considered it as a tat or ring but landing on a ring. Can I get a sanity check?
I think that could look really sweet with the skull ring you grabbed
I had a nerd ring made before but I had no taste at the time so I'm trying to reintegrate being a nerd without looking like shit
although fair warning I think all the swords tarot cards look cool, my brain is poisoned from looking at tattoos of them
it's just that style of square signet with oxidised silver
ah with the volition design in place?
exactly
I think it would work
It's an interesting abstract design on it's own. I just love what it represents, and I want it sitting on my finger reminding me to make the right decisions.
I think it having a good personal resonance for you makes it even cooler
and it's already a sick design
Anyone know of anything similar to this with a āsoftā bracelet, so like a chain or sth? I donāt much like the way bangles feel.
Would leather work
Yeah, anything as long as itās not rigid.
Also beads are out, my gf hates them
Oh wait are you saying I should just swap it out?
i could see you hooking that monkey into a braided leather strap pretty easily
^
yeah im wondering if leather would meet your needs for the strap
Alright, follow up question: who has good leather strap recs?
@carrion
never change
No not that kind
If you wanted this set on a chain bracelet you could take it to a jeweler and they should be able to do that for you
That will be more expensive than leather, obviously
This sort of leather strap should be pretty straightforward for any competent leatherworker
speaking of: got some bolo pendants coming tomorrow but no tie/rope on 'em so going to hit the store tomorrow. gonna get braided leather but also might try to use some veg tanned cord for one too.
slowly looking into some more accessories, i swagger-jacked elvander and bought the same needles peace pendant he has but might grab a chain or two, just debating width rn.

i m into jewellery when its big and chunky bc if not you barely notice it on the outfit nor me
Sometimes it's a piece just for u
Sometimes I like subtlety
sadly i dress quite undemurely so unless the jewellery big and visible it just looks too unnoticeable and not adding to the fit
@kyn did you ever get around to looking around at gold
if not, I might just, no promises
alas no
Godspeed
Fair warning, gold is more expensive than it's ever been right now. Be prepared for sticker shock if you're used to silver prices.
