SThe home folder is guaranteed to survive a rebase, right? What about contents in the etc folder? Trying to avoid losing anything important in this little experiment.

Tin my experience:
rebasing from GNOME to KDE is usually fine, some GNOME files are leftover in Home but other than that it seemed fine. rebasing from KDE to GNOME may have issues, but they might be fixable without a reinstall

SOk, thanks, Kyle. I have a few bugs lingering in my install and I was thinking maybe a full reinstall would help with those. Would rebasing to the same OS version or an image from the last X days help at all with that?

KRebasing or reinstalling should almost never fix bugs, since we all have the same base image
