Microcontroller are for low end embedded applications that don't require much computation. Used in most IoT devices. They have lesser memory that microprocessor, usually in the range of KB and MB. While microprocessor can be used in high end applications like computer boards. Though they have much differences

Microcontroller are low-cost and low energy consumption, tz application hostes on microcontrollers are small, and the microprocessor are expensive compared they host generally operating system like unix kernel

Platform IO is going to give you breadth of hardware support if you plan on moving beyond ESP in the future. Another option might be Embeetle, which @kmulier developed. However, you might want to get feedback from @Umesh Lokhande @Aditya thakekar @Joseph Ogbonna and others who actively develop on ESP to get their take.

Open source documentation is extensive on esp32... Try merging esp-idf with tensorflow lite.. AI dataset modelling just skyrockets the applications.

Thank you for your activity, @kmulier. When adding a new symbol, I prefer keeping the designator with the ? wildcard. Then, after all changes are implemented, the annotation of the entire schematic is done. Or sheet by sheet. Or selected block by selected block. It all depends on the project. Some customers wants different series for different sheets or blocks. If the new kicad_designators plugin works for you well, I am happy!

are you on MSP430FR seires?
I agree with the tediousness coming to MSP libraries and APIs. Not quite intuitive as ST or Renesas. Nordic nRF54 series and SiLabs C8051F have pioneered low power one with radio and other for low-end processing.

I have worked on Infineon series of parts and seen their Capsense which is ultimate. Note that it is MCU integrated in their PSoC series of chips and provides and GUI to configure sensitivity, pattern etc. If you're looking for external IC, check https://www.ti.com/product/FDC2214

Yes FR series. Never used Nordic or Silicon labs MCUs. Heard that Nordic has no good documentation.

Yes, measurement signals in terms of current. Good for log distances and no suceptible for external noise like voltage signals.

Exact same though I had 3 years back, but I have seen some niche industries in India they still use 8 bit MCUs. Some people still wants to continue with even 8051 (family).

I didn't know about the '?''?' wildcard option for designators in KiCAD. Thank you for pointing that out!
This will already help me for 90% of the cases I struggle with. In my next design, I will for sure use this wildcard to avoid non-matching designator numbers.

However, the other 10% of cases is when a design is "ready" but I forgot to add a component here or there. Last minute changes - you know... I think I can still use my script in those particular circumstances. So the effort is not in vain

Thanks again for pointing out the wildcard option. I learned again something new today.
