DI'm looking to test an eGPU dock over USB4/Thunderbolt. I've got a GTX 980 laying around; do those older Nvidia cards "just work" without issue? I've heard that Wayland + Nvidia + Drivers are a mixed bag, but not for older ones. Ideally, I'd like to be able to plug in the GPU and use the built-in display on my handheld. I don't want to use an external display. I'm using the Deck image, btw. I feel like that may cause problems.
DIf I need to scrounge up an AMD card, I will.

KIIRC the 9xx series was dropped from nvidia's drivers
Kand the 1xxx series works, but very badly
Kand then NVK (open source future nvidia driver) is 16xx/2xxx+ by nvidia's doing
DHm, bummer. I feel like I heard the older cards worked under an open-source driver that's already in the kernel. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. This 980 is just something I've got. I was planning on putting in a used 5700 XT.
Kthey do, but the older cards are locked to the lowest (2d) clock speed with no way to fix it

KNvidia started cryptographically securing their cards, and only recently allowed control via a blob on the 16xx and 2xxx
Kthat's why NVK is limited to that and up

SI suppose that NVK vs proprietary driver is still slower on 4xxx cards?
KIn some very specific workloads it's faster, but I would wait another year for true parity and/or improvement
KAnd on some laptops it will always be slower due to Nvidia's blob STILL locking off the highest clock speed
