My guess is that the motor was preheated from earlier and does a bit of thermal throttling, it shouldn't be going 'bad' - it either works or doesn't 
In the off chance - it could be a thermal paste issue between the motor and transistors on the driver pcb that impedes heat dissipation into the motor, that causes it to register higher temperatures.
When pot_2 is unconnected it floats a bit due to high electrical impedance, but if it's disabled in software it doesn't do anything regardless
