Hi, I have a query regarding my newest Rhino ( I have 2) - its only 1 few months old and gets lightly used as a Helo cyclic base only. I have noticed a few times now, it suddenly turns the fans on full blast, when I have not been been using it....like just now, which prompted me. The PC has been sat idle, downloading the Afghanistan map and the update for 3 hours or so and yet suddenly, the fans come on for about 2 minutes full blast...and I have not even used it today! Is this right?

I would pull up the VP configurator and have a look at the temperatures. The fan should only start if the temp goes above 50 C.
When you have your Rhino powered and for some reason it‘s vibrating (can happen when the gains and low pass filters are mismatched) I could imagine that it will slowly warm up….. but thats very theoretical and probably unlikely

Yeah, I'd check the telemetry output, what are the motor currents at idle? Maybe it's configured to balance a heavy stick/extension, it will def heat up over time.

does anyone else get in-game joystick jittering in DCS when using Periodic Effects? I have to turn the effects down to nearly zero otherwise the in game joystick and subsequent control surfaces (ailerons and elevator) continuously jitter. For reference, I'm using a VKB grib with a small VKB extension (dont think that it matters in this case but I could be dead wrong) and flying the Spitfire.

Big difference between the virpil software and the virpil joystick tester.

The latter works for any joystick even xbx gamepads.
As its just looking for any HID input and display graphs for axes and numbered buttons.

You need to select the grip profile (VPC Alpha?) and calibrate the twist axis in the VP configurator.

Just received my notice to place an order. TBH I thought I had another 6 months to ramp up my research on the Rhino, and that is, in part, prompting my question. I am not chatgpt so i have not read and analyzed every post on this discord, so apologies in advance if this can be pieced together with a deeper read (happy to read a couple linked posts if provided in lieu of a response), but I at least know so far that the key differentiator of this product is the software/firmware, so wanted to pose this question here as it has everything to do with ongoing support: In light of the new entrants to the FFB market, what are your plans @walmis and @Number481 regarding providing ongoing support for the rhino and telemffb? if your support stopped today how long could we reasonably expect to be able to use the rhino before a msfs/dcs update destroyed compatability? Are we at a stage where updates/fixes are more QoL than mission critical? Thanks!

Hi, we're not going anywhere - the current firmware is quite mature with more QoL updates are cooking, telemFFB is open source - which in any case community can always make some quick fixes if necessary.

I thought I would chime in also. Mate brilliant questions you asked and actually very relevant. I can perhaps help you get up to speed from just a customers perspective. I am not in anyway affiliated with Walmis or that amazing Rhino. I was however on the waiting list for about 8-9 months and only just received my Rhino about a month ago, I had been following along at every stage of the updates and progression for about 12 month. Researched the heck out of everything I could find on the internet over that period while I waiting. I have nothing but absolute confidence in what they are doing, how far they have come and the stability of the product and the support. My biggest concern honestly now that I have my Rhino, is getting enough time in the rig hahaha.

Yo. I have had the stick for quite some time now, but there are still some concepts i struggle to understand. Like all the enabled effects. Will dcs override (disable) effects that are not applicable for a certain module? Furtheremore. How does the gain play into all off this. I assume this controls the overall force applied to all effects? And from observing discussions here it seems that bigger motor / power is better? In my experience, full gain in combination with full centering spring is pretty much unusable (locks up the stick). I guess I am woundering how people really use the stick? Do they change (template) config when swapping modules etc?

The effects you see in the configurator are only defaults if the game doesn’t apply any effects — in other words, they will be overwritten by the game and/or telemffb. UNLESS you have Sticky checked on the effect, then it will ignore the game/telem’s effect.

As for getting settings right — this is mostly a personal thing. You should tune it how you want. I personally run with all the effects at 100% in the configurator (think of this as like a max limiter for the effect, it’s up to the game or telemffb for how strong it is) except for periodic effects at 50% and friction at like 7% (because friction can have weird vibration effects if overdone). Then I use TelemFFB to tune effects for individual aircraft, and the gain knob to turn down the spring effect if I find it too strong for a particular plane

Think of the different gains as factors. Master gain x settings gain x effect gain. Where effect gain. an be overridden by the application. So basically with master and settings gain you determine the maximum strength of any given effect. (If one of those e.g. is set to 80%, the overall force can‘t be over 80%.) From my experience the threefold of friction, inertia and damping only works well with lower settings (<20).

With DCS, my personal recommendation would be similar to what I outlined above — have most of the settings be uncapped, a bit like the attached screenshot.

Then use a combination of your hardware gain knob and the TelemFFB app to customize for an aircraft until it feels right. If it’s too strong, turn things down, if you don’t like certain effects, turn them off. The nice thing with TelemFFB is that your customizations are aircraft specific, so once set, it will just detect the aircraft and bring up your saved settings.

As was said earlier, settings can be highly contingent in what sort of extension you have, the weight of your grip, and also personal preference, do you like a stiff or looser spring force, etc

I think, DCS (natively) doesn’t apply things like friction and inertia. Only spring and very limited periodic effects. If TelemFFB deals with friction and inertia? I doubt it. I believe those are more to make the stick feel to your taste. But I could be mistaken.

yeah -- i also am not sure if it applies stuff like that. to add though -- TelemFFB now allows you to add those specific settings on an aircraft per aircraft basis, so almost never a need to use the configurator to add effects unless you are playing a game that doesn't have any FFB or TelemFFB support

I just tested the apache with max gain, hoping that the module takes over and disables the spring force (enabled but not sticky). I am assuming that the apache works like other helicopters and that it has minimal «spring force.» Does not seem to be the case in DCS. With max gain, I can barely move the apache stick. Is this simply something DCS does not support? Can this be «fixed» in telemffb?

Oh awesome mate, glad you have seen that video and it was helpful, my intention is to really share how amazing the Rhino and its software is. The software is honestly what really makes this unit shine. As you would have seen, I was able to dial up the feedback past what is actually realistic, I want to feel road vibration, I want to feel the stick forces on landing. You have so many options to play with so you can tune the feeling of the stick to exactly how you want it to feel, realistic or beyond realistic as in my case hahaha. I had the stick pull out of my hand on one of my bush landings with the landing feedback cranked to 100%, sure, that's not realistic for a real pilot used to flying bush planes but for an average bloke like me, I am having a heck of a time in my rig. That's the beauty of the software, tune it how you want.
