For sure. If I set 1 and timeout to 0, only process 1 message at a time, and it's almost impossible to do anything useful

I'll probably create 10+ queues and random between then.

What's the issue you're having right now?

You can setup pull consumers (https://developers.cloudflare.com/queues/configuration/pull-consumers/) if you want to manually control the level of concurrency. But the default push based consumers should automatically scale up your consumer workers based on demand.

I have a queue with concurrency = 1, because we're rate limited by an external API. I'd like to set up a system, where as soon as the call to the external API is completed, a new message gets pulled from the queue, while the previous worker is still handling persisting the data to the database.

Right now, if you ack()ack() a message, while you're still handling some stuff inside a ctx.awaitUntil()ctx.awaitUntil(), the queue will wait with handling the next batch until the waitUntilwaitUntil is fully handled.

Any idea on how we could solve this with queues?

That’s not true: we don’t (currently) autoscale if you have a consumer that is especially slow - the “wall clock” time of the consumer doesn’t yet feed into our autoscaling alg.

Batches are consumed concurrently.

You could consider working around this in the meantime by setting concurrency = 20 (the current maximum).

Anyone notice that when using "List messages" for a queue in the dashboard, it never seems to respect the "Maximum batch size" entered there? E.g. if I enter "50" it returns 10 messages (when >50 are in the backlog), and if I enter "1" it returns 10 messages.

the limit is per queue. so you can manually shard / distribute messages across multiple queues yes, to get higher throughput. It's what a lot of folks do today. Although... higher queue limits are coming very soon!

Thanks for the clarification! What I did not notice before is that I'm also really limited by a separate factor here: The max. 6 outbound connection limit. The use case (votings) will produce multiple thousand messages in a minute or so. But the consumer side cannot push messages (in this case to an external backend) fast enough as it is limited to a maximum of 6 concurrent connections. And even worse it won't scale up the consumer concurrency from 1.

ah gotcha, yeah the limit of 6 outbound connections is a hard one unfortunately.

Your consumers should scale up though; at the end of processing each batch of messages, queues checks if the consumer concurrency should be increased (based on looking at the backlog). There are a few reasons why it might not autoscale (listed on this page in the docs: https://developers.cloudflare.com/queues/configuration/consumer-concurrency/)

Don't quote me on that but it may be possible that event notifications don't work on jurisdictional buckets yet. Super Slurper and Logpush are not supported right now, so it may also apply to Event notifications.

So I see that we can have 10,000 queues per account enabling easy sharding:
