I had layered Koi with rpm
-ostree but apparently Ublue devs recommend using Brew instead
R

What

What's the difference?
P

8/11/24, 11:39 AM
brew won
't blow out how long it takes to update and you don
't subject yourself to unnecessary layering

you can thing about brew like a flatpak but for cli apps
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:39 AM
ostree itself is half the reason updating takes so long
P

•
8/11/24, 11:39 AM
distro agnostic
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:39 AM
^ if you need a CLI app you should go brew
> distrobox
> ostree layer as a last resort
R
Robotta
•
8/11/24, 11:39 AM
So
, should I ostree reset and then Brew Koi
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:40 AM
layering is not really supported very much so yeah
R
Robotta
•
8/11/24, 11:40 AM
Makes sense then
R

•
8/11/24, 11:40 AM
Will do that later
P

•
8/11/24, 11:40 AM
honestly i
'd suggest it just because layering takes so long

just keep in mind
cask
cask
packages are for MacOS and you can
't really mess up
P

•
8/11/24, 11:42 AM
you don
't really see linux stuff on brew that has any form of GUI

Hmm crazy idea but
R

•
8/11/24, 11:43 AM
Could one technically do brew install steam
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:43 AM
no
, it would more than likely be a cask for MacOS
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:43 AM
because steam is a GUI tool and already has other distribution methods on linux
R
Robotta
•
8/11/24, 11:43 AM
I see

Oh really

But why would loads of high street shops sell them
P

yeah
, steam brew package is a cask
P

you don't really see linux stuff on brew that has any form of GUI

asen23
•
8/11/24, 11:44 AM
pretty sure any gui app in brew are
strictly
macos only
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:44 AM
this means it
's only really useful for macos users who want a package manager
- if we need that
, we have our own package managers
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:44 AM
the point of brew supporting both mac and linux is so we can share CLI tools

What tricks

A

also cli stuff between linux and macos are basically similar enough cuz both are unix but the gui part are wildly different
R

8/11/24, 11:45 AM
So
, Brew install Koi would work
? Or do I stick to rpm

sorta
, there
's still some porting process involved for actual native apps

P

sorta, there's still some porting process involved for actual native apps
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:47 AM
most apps are just leveraging other runtimes for portability
, or redownloading actual binaries as a part of the formulae
P
Pez
•
8/11/24, 11:48 AM
so it doesn
't really provide any actual guarantees that macos
/ linux CLI apps will play nice with each other
, we just usually have smarter developers than that
R

So, Brew install Koi would work? Or do I stick to rpm-ostree for that one?
